Thread: Legal question about design copyright

I always thought you could copy a design with copyright but only if it was made from a different material and adjusted slightly as to no completely infringe.

but I will be interested to hear from someone who knows...so hopefully some info will get put in here

It only becomes an issue if you make enough money to make it worthwhile for someone to come after you.

Similarity issues are all over the place. With printed circuit boards you can get copyright on the artwork and all it takes to get around that is to make a change to the pcb layout and apparently you can get around the copyright. Whereas with music it appears that all some have had to do is show some small similarity and it has been enough to get the court to rule that your copyright has been breached.

I think that it varies from place to place so it depends where the action is taken.

About 15 years ago I manufactured bale feed forks for moving and feeding out of round bales, built about 400 of these and they were sold through a statewide company that I worked for (these were all built under contract to the company outside my normal work hrs), long story short, the company also sold a simular unit made in new zealand. The nz company seen them sitting side by side with mine being $200 cheaper but built a lot heavier. They were going to sue my ass (there words) but in the end they didnt because of the heavy duty built of mine it was deemed to be different enough, I think the figure was 10%. So be careful or move to china
