this issue needs to settle down a little

i use adverts to pay for the place as i haven't found another solution to paying for it.

have tried subscriptions and special areas, didnt work, i ended up with bigger bills.

so now, the advertising contractor sends me some $'s, google sends me some $'s, ebay sends me some $'s, and the likes of tombie and many others that donate things from time to time gives me some $'s as well.

the world was a somewhat happy place until drop down adverts appeared.

i dont go round hassling people for money, i barely use the place to help my own business and what i have done, i was poked and prodded into doing. but i now run it under my business name as it has income coming in from the advertising.

i do not ask people to start threads like this and although i deeply appreciate the assist, i cop crap from those that have a problem with the place being what it is.

that is fine, i see past it but i get a bit sick of having to deal with it.

i have asked for the drop down adverts to be removed and we will see how that affects the $'s coming in.

the place is what it is, it will continue as it is as long as i own it.

In actual fact it is becuase of this website that I own Land Rovers, I Googled Four wheel drive vehicle comparisions or something like that and ended up here.

I was originally looking at a Toyota or Nissan but after reading all about Land Rovers and how they compare with other vehicles I decided on going out and driving a Disco to see what all the fuss was about. Now I own two of the buggers.

Anyway this website is an excellent place to meet people find out about your vehicles and any other related 4x4 activities. The best thing about it though is the people on it. Nearly every other 4x4 website I have visited is full of nongs.

Websites like this aren't cheap to keep running, I should know I have my own community / news sport related website that takes up alot of my time and financial resources to run. I take my hat off to Dave and the team of Mods for keeping it going and making it a welcoming and friendly place to visit and that has to be worth a few bucks a year as far as I'm concerned.

    cheers,
    Terry

I think this is a very good point and agree whole heartedly, its not just the running expenses, but also the hours and hours of work and dedication by these individuals that make the site what it is.

As for the drop down adverts, yes they were giving me the irrits as well as I would accidentally scroll over them... maybe a simple click to activate the advert as opposed to scroll over would fix the issue. BUT having said that, I prefer the ads any day and have the forum still operate.

    Touche TerryO and Stooge.

I was interested in LRs, did a www search, found the forum, sussed out the quirks of Discos and ended up buying a vehicle off a member and haven't looked back.

My philosophy is that good deeds need to be rewarded and I treat, especially this, subscrption as an investment in the future of AULRO.

Thanks to all involved in this site.

you need a server or two !

a sun t1000 cost me $8000 with a few years left on the monthly lease payments and there is the ibm intel based server that cost me several grand that i only just finished the payments on...
Dude! 8k & 7k?? Hate to say but you got ripped big time! I am a IT infrastructure specialist & deal with these types & HP\IBM servers all day.

For about 4 or maybe close 5k alone you could have gotten 1 server in say 2ru running Sata Raid 0+1 or straight out 5 running terrabyte drives, can be done lots cheaper as well if you had attached storage shared between the main & a fail over host. (I know as I spec up projects worth millions in hardware & software for Citrix.com farms & Vmware.com farms, not to mention Microsoft server clusters.)

Perhaps next time you are looking at such things drop me a message as I am more then sure I could help!

I do admire how much work is done behind the scenes on this forum (I don't realy know but could only imagine)

i only read what I want to read, I would ashume the mods would have to read everything rather than scan over things,

PS I like your new avatar Incisor
