    sounds and looks like a cj6 which was basically a long wheel base version of the cj5.

    The OHC Hurricane Six was a marvellous engine but was commonly replaced with something else because of the high cost of reconditioning them. A Chrysler Hemi 6 was commonly used and is a far better conversion than a Falcon.

    Combat 6

    In the late 60's early 70's Jeep offered a 6 cylinder version known as the combat 6. It used a falcon 6cyl I believe it is know as the super pursuit.
    It was a local conversion and modified the 4cyl model this explains the cut and modified firewall. Later CJ 5/ 6 came factory US with 6cyl these are identified by the longer nose. The front guards have and extensoin added to them were they meet the forewall. The CJ were marketed to both civilian and Government markets. The Government offer allowed for more modification to both body and running gear and were very millitary in construction.

    Geez fellas. They were assembled in Brisbane and fitted with the Falcon 6 from new.
    My colleague Jerzey Stanley left Ford to become MD of Jeep for many years.

    And this begat the Falcon XY 4WD, as Ford HQ gave each state some money to come up with ideas for models. The Surferoo was NSW AFAIR, and Qld through Tom Tarpay worked out that if the Falcon engine would go in a Jeep then maybe jeep running gear would fit under a Falcon.

    A prototype was built and AFAIR only needed a couple of unique parts to work. I drove every one of the 433 ? Falcon 4WDs from the assembly line.

    PS AFAIR most were CJ5s but there was a model later with a long wheelbase (CJ6) called the Overlander. AFAIR there were also some utes .

    When did they stop using Falcon engines and use the Rambler 6? I know the Rambler was in use in 1979 because a mate bought one new and still has it. I also know the Rambler 360 V8 was in some in the early seventies as I had the pleasure of driving one with auto trans and Quadratrac full-time 4WD. This could spin all four on dry bitumen. Whoo Hoo, great fun. What other engines were used by Jeep?

    The 360 V8 was fitted to the SJ Cherokee. You are right, they went quite well for a big heavy tank - a mate used to have one. I believe they had UJs in the front axle (even with quadratrack).

    In the USA they always used the Rambler 4.2 which became the 4.0 in the Cherokee.
    Dredging back in the memory , the reason they used Falcon 6 was to get local content up, as it was then prohibitively expensive to import and import quotas were in effect. So they got local content up with assembly, engine , tyres, etc etc to over 60% .

    Quotas were still in effect in 1980 when I joined BMW as I remember finding 1500 at the Fiat importer who had given up and buying some from the Morgan importer.

    Once the quotas went, I believe they then reverted to full import and they would have had the AMC 4.2.

    I believe Ford assembled Jeeps, and were owed money. That's how the 4X4 XY came about, Ford cut out the bill by using Jeep's transfer and Danas.
