The media around this is ridiculous. We are actually a good team, and we played GERMANY, which is one of the BIG 4 teams this year. The other three include Netherlands (never won a world cup) Spain (won 3 times I think) Brazil (5 times?) and Germany 4. Guys we were never going to win this game, it served as a good shake out, we rested key players another 5 days. In our lot we always had to beat the next two teams, regardless of when. Also remember this the world cup, many very good teams are not competing - because they did not qualify!! (Greece did not qualify for the 2006 world cup after winning the euro cup only months before as I remember) Also remember we have qualified two times in a row and before that only once in the 70's.
We have a very good chance at getting to the next round. But spare a thought for Serbia, they now have to win the next two games as we do, but one of theirs is against Germany!!
Agree entirely F4. Many of the commentry is from those whose background in most things is hang around the winner. Lets invite Easter island to play cricket so we can thump them at a game that has not appreciation outside a few countries. Or we could do what the Yank sdo and have a world series and invite no one, lets call it the AFL allstars.
We were playing a multiple winner in a game we are in the embyronic (sic) stages of developing. Germany played pretty well, we should have had our pencils and paper out leaning every bit we could. We played awful. Friendlies are one thing where you play the X team who wont come out here. Playing the A team in full world cup glory is a good thing. Its also a round robin first round as as been said, so we still have two games to go Serbia have to play Germany after losing to Ghana. Any team that loses two is generally out.
The "experts" will be calling Pim a genius and wanting their "Harry your my best mate we never doubted you it was the other guys" interview if we beat Ghana and Serbia.
more than one game you know
mat
New Zealand 1 - 1 Slovakia
Wohooo go the All Whites :ohyes:
Nil all at half time and a Slovakian goal soon after the restart. Within 2 minutes of time NZ scored the equaliser.
Saved me a bit of money that draw....phew
Soccer not football
The correct name of the game is actually soccer. This came about in 1863 with the creation of the London Football Association (FA) to control the game of soccer. Until then there had been no seperate body for the game known as soccer which had been controlled via part of the much older Rugby Football Association which could trace its lineage back to about 1300.
Use of the term Football for the game of soccer is more about local British political class based one upmanship as soccer was considered the working mans game while Rugby was for the rest. Soccer had split from the establishment by leaving the Rugby Football Association and hence needed to self justify its importance and attempted to achieve this at a local grass roots level by attacking the name of the body they had split from. They did this by taking over the name football previously used to describe Rugby. Hence the use of the term Football for Soccer tends to be a British thing. The rest of the world continued to use the original name of the game.
I was under the impression that the 'soccer' moniker came AFTER the formation of the FA (soccer being short for Association), to distinguish it from the many other forms of football played at the time. From memory I think the Rugby Union came later.
Anyway looks like an uphill battle for the Aussie boys, good result for the All Whites though...
If anyone is interested in a satirical comedic book on soccer/football I can recommend you look for Terry Pratchett's "Unseen Academicals".
Pratchett, T (2009). Unseen Academicals. Doubleday ISBN 9780385609340.
If you are a fan of Pratchett's it is not as strong as his previous works but is still a laugh-out-loud good read.
If you have never read any of his previous books, there is a bit of character history you'll be missing but it is still a good read none the less.
I enjoyed the characterisation of "the shove" among many other themes around the game that stands up to a good old p***take.
