They do. If you own a pigeon, you have a little tag around their leg. Untagged pigeons are fair game and I don't thing anyone would be concerned if the end up as cat food.
[QUOTE=davidsonsm;2135997]Yep, some of the replies on here really defy me. The anti-cyclist mentality that is raised by some of the comments is something I struggle to understand. Where does it come from? Why is it so prevalent in Australia.
Ok, one thing in here that is irrelevant is the talk about Lycra! Who cares what it look like??!! If a cyclist chooses to wear it for aerodynamics etc, so be it.
The issue here is the high percentage of cyclists/road users alike who really don't care... and this will cause issues in its own right. That aside there are some simple changes that could be made.. What I have an issue with is in the attached picture. You have two people riding side by side on a fast road. They have no protection other than a helmet. A semi could pass them at 80/100kph (dependant on speed limit).. Would you stand that close to a train passing thru a station?? I think not. Why do they need to ride side by side?? To talk?? Have a leisurely chat about what they had for tea last night? These two people are placing themselves in such a dangerous position.. I know the law states that you can ride side by side, but realistically, why would you?? Roads have changed, cars are faster, better protected, and more often driven purely as a tool.. Bicycles have got lighter, harder to see, riders are slimmer.... Harder to see.. If our two pictured cyclists were to ride one behind the other to the left of the left carriageway, then the car in the middle lane could pass in that lane by hugging the RH line and still have 1.5m between them. Yes, if a semi was coming up behind them, then it should by rights pull around our cyclists. (I know that on that road, where I could and had plenty of visual advanced warning I would pull out around them giving plenty of room).. I see no rhyme or reason why anyone would want to place themselves in such danger, cyclist or otherwise. This idea that a group of 4 bicycles taking up a car space is safer is utter guff!! How did they work that out??? Sorry if you disagree, but if anyone can come up with a plausible reason as to how its safe, please enlighten me.

I think they do it so the overtaking car has to use the other lane as it would if it was passing a car. It stops people forcing the way past in the same lane if there is other traffic in the outer lane, when they probably shouldn't. Not saying I agree, and I only tend to ride on my own so I don't do it.
Also the outer cyclist could actually be passing the inner one, not riding as a pair like everyone is speculating especially considering he is not sitting up like the other one.
Also however much protection a cyclist was to wear it wouldn't help much in the event of getting run over by a semi I wouldn't think.
Had one clown today. stopped his car to answer his mobile in the bike lane, forcing me into the traffic to pass.
Mick - are you aware that the Beach Road on weekend mornings have been declared a Clearway in response to safety concerns for cyclists?
And being a clearway has no impact on the arguments given

I don't know how you think I am intolerant? Oh, hang on, I'm intolerant of road users who disregard the road rules. So are the police. The intolerant bastards.
It just so happens, from my (and others) observations, there are a greater proportion of arrogant, disrespectful and aggressive road users in the cycling community than any other road user. That is why, when I go out for a ride on the push bike, I cycle alone. I don't like it when that mob mentality whips into a frenzy and the mob of cyclists go on a rampage vandalising cars and general violent behavior.
I havent read this thread yet but going by the title I will say this.
I am a cycle aware driver and give them a wide berth for the simple reason that if I am involved in them coming a gutsa, I could be in trouble with the law and or insurance companies.
I dont need that sort of crap regardless of right or wrongs and who did what.
If I had an accident with a cyclist I dont think I would come out a winner and that is the bottom line.

The road in question is the Beach Road in Melbourne. Arguably the most cycled road in the world. On any given weekend, particularly early, there are literally 1000's of cyclists using it. In addition to the Clearway, there is also a 50kmph speed restriction. So the photo in question, is probably a poor example in terms of the points being made.
And being a clearway has no impact on the arguments given
It does. Because the clearway should prevent cyclists from having to move in to the outside lane - thereby allowing the light traffic (at that time of day) to pass freely.

Maybe the actions of intolerant and aggressive drivers have made them that way. Maybe its the young invicible mentality. I'd still argue they are a minority in the cycling community. Me, I know I'm a mortal and try my best to stay out of harms way - whilst still enjoying my riding. It really hurts when you fall off a bike and do my upmost to avoid it.

Tagged pidgeons aren't running amock causing death and destruction on our roads. They're tucked up in a loft and are properly trained. You're not a pidgeon fancier are you?

Only if they're in a nice pie with vegies on the side.
I had some poached rabbit at a restaurant the other day. It was delicious.
