One big problem i see up here is roads that have been designated as cycle training routes.I don't know who makes the call on which roads to use but it's not done with much thought.
One of the roads used is the main Townsville port road which is used by B-double trucks moving at 100kph and the cycle lane is fairly skinny.The idea of having big fast moving trucks and small slow moving cyclist in close contact with each other is not real bright.
You can't blame the cyclist for using the road as it is designated as a training route but at the same time it's also a road used by big trucks,i am not a B-double driver but i am guessing that they don't respond very quickly or stop on a dime.
This is a disaster waiting to happen and it is caused by placing trucks and cyclist together,in the paper up here there is regular stories about near misses by cyclist leveled at the truck drivers.At the same time i don't think the cyclist understand that a big truck at speed is very limited in where it can go to avoid them while staying in their lane to avoid on-coming traffic.
Common sense has to prevail before someone gets killed.
Why is everybody in such a rush to get somewhere theae days. Oh, I sound like my old man 30 years ago.
I have just been told cyclists can only ride 2 abreast in WA if it's dual carriageway.
