Yes she did close most of the coal industry and put whole communities out of work and yes she did sell off the nationalised industries. But that is not a bad thing, British coal was expensive to extract, almost exhausted and was heavily polluting high sulphur coal. The auto industry was moribund and only kept alive by the life support machine of the British taxpayer. Had her reforms not been implemented, the U.K. today would be in a state not dissimilar to Greece and Spain needing to be bailed out by the EU.

I'm not really up there with how well Thatcher did / did not do as PM. Never took a lot of notice at the time.
But her open support of Pinochet was enough to put me off the woman for life.
Agree with earlier comments though that gender has absolutely no bearing on how well anyone performs in the PM or any other role. I can quote way more male leaders who have completely stuffed countries than female leaders, so this type of logic just doesn't hold water.
Will be very glad to see Rudd get his come-uppance. Long overdue. But I don't think that Julia Gillard is the one to lead Labor out of its troubles either. She comes across as way too arrogant for my liking. I think they'd be much better served with Lindsay Tanner as leader. From what I've seen of him, he is a far better performer in debates etc than either Rudd or Gillard, and is more than a match for Abbott. But I don't want to see him in the role at the moment either - would much rather see a change in government at the moment than any continuation of the current disastrous economic policies.
Time to get back on track. Cant wait for PM Gillard to make her first appearance at the G20 open her mouth with that nasal bogan voice of hers and embarass the hell out of us.
I dont care how smart or competent she is, that voice of hers is just wrong.

I have been doing a job for a customer who has acquaintances/ties with people in the Vic Labor Party. The word is Mr Rudd is not a very nice person and is way different to what the public sees.
Personally, I could see through his hype before the last federal election.
