This will sound a bit like "you scratch my back...". but...
After seeing the facilities supplied and the treatment doled out to those working within the mental health industry,( by both patients and governments!) there is not a snowflakes chance that I would contemplate a job swap!! In SA the govt seems convinced that closing our mental health hospital (glenside) and selling the land off will somehow assist in the "re intregation" of the patients into society.
my admiration is with those doing the jobs that keep the 'wheels' turning.
THANKS!
Thanks to you too.
NSW post the Richmond Report in the mid 1980's is the same. Gladesville Hospital, where I worked is now up-market harbourside homes.
As you may or may not know, in the early years of the colony, it was illegal for "lunatics" to travel on the Kings Highway. Hence all the sandstone era "mental asylums" were on navigable rivers. Rozelle (Callan Park), Gladesville, Parramatta and Peat Island on the Hawkesbury. So all the Wran government could see was all the money it could save from kicking out the mentally ill and selling the land. While they did kick out the patients and have sold most of the land, the same patients are now mostly prisoners costing far more per person with very little chance of "cure".
I saw an interesting doco on bulletproof and knife proof clothing.
Standard kevlar is good at stopping bullets, but not knives it seems. Someone has developed a fluid that you pour on the fabric which also makes it hugely more resistant to stab and puncture attack.
