Knock your socks off...plus being at Tamborine...you can come along to a club meeting. I have a 03 Disco TD5, bought with 89k now done 160k...around 15-20 trips and has been great. Take a few for s test drive...you'll love it,

Well I have been lurking here for a few months and I have to say I am ready to take the plunge into the world of LR for real.
Initially I was daunted by the amount of maintenance that these vehicles can require. Also the LR reliability record was mentioned by a few cruiser/patrol friends (should I say associates now rather than friends??) but after a good chat with a friend up on the sunshine coast (who is of course completely biased due to being a LR nut) I am giving the bank a call...
A D3 would be awesome but is out of my range. Thus I am looking at D2a's (TD5 of course) with as low mileage on them as possible (ie ~100k) These seem to range from 30k plus at dealers to low 20k in private sales. I prefer manuals but these are rare and for towing I believe an auto is better (after smelling the clutch in my forester when towing off road).
Any last comments, or advice before I reach the point of no turning back?
I have frequented other forums for advice and I have to say that the general chatter here is a lot more friendlier and helpful and without a lot of the "mine is bigger than yours" posting that plagues other manufacturer forums. Thus I say an indirect thanks to many of you for your informative and realistic posts.
Cheers
Michael

Every manufacture has its downfalls or weak links, it is a matter of what you are prepared to live with.
I have an 02 TD5 auto and love it. 225,000k's on it now, owned since new.
Have a look through the technical section and D2 areas to see what potential problems may occur or what to look out for. In my opinion the D2a's are the pick of the bunch.
Same advice for all Landy's. Have its condition checked. If well maintained then they are great. Get one that has issues and it can take a lot to sort it out.
Mine will have a brand new engine in it very shortly.
It was great at first but had been damaged before I bought it and bodged up. I have spent years getting the bugs out but sadly my engine has paid the price.
I still think it has performed better than anything else I have ever owned. She has made it home on times when others would not have.
I do long distances so any issues are quick to show up on all our cars.
Best thing is test drive a few. Check them out and lower the price by cost of repairs if required. Look after it and it will take care of you.

Well it's Landrover forum isn't it? Everybody has a huge one. And some have several!
Anyway, all the best with your search. My favourite piece of advice Ive read here for questions like yours is if it ain't got a detailed service history, walk away and keep looking.
For what it's worth.
I own a 300Tdi Disco 1. 296000 ks. It currently has; a blown head gasket; LHS F & R doors don't open; a bearing with knackered balls somewhere in the pump section of the motor and my missus drives it to work every day!
This is the only car I have ALWAYS had complete confidence in getting home in when the old girl gets a bit sick.
It's a relationship not a piece of bling.
Welcome.
Well my friend, you have done the first thing right and not listenned to the sheep. I am sick of hearing that crap from the jap crap owners that are so blinkered they believe all the negative cooments about LR without looking at them and realising that they are the only designed from the ground up 4wd left. You can tell from the way you have said thaey carry on on their forums that they are all about appearances and status and don't know "fair dinkum" from Jap Crap
Good on you. By the way, for mine the defender is the only way to go, not only can you hose them out and not have to worry much about panel damage, they are bloody easy to find in car parks.
Steve
dont forget also they are also bloody hard to get into car parks... if not impossible!
