maybe trot in to the nearest police station or vic roads and explain that you are interested in buying the car but that its listed as a write off, explain how when inspected it looks the ducks guts, show the photos..
ask them if they think its sus....(eg rebirth attempt?) or if they can advise which status it really is...
maybe they could inspect the car themselves to make sure its not stolen or sus??? maybe they could call back and advise you of the status??

Another thing to look out for is - insurance companies will only give you third party insurance for a repaired written off vehicle.
Thats what i was told by a mate who was looking to buy back his written off hail damaged explorer.

If it has been a repaired "repairable write-off" then I would expect it to list as "INSPECTED-WRITEOFF" on the vehicle status check after it has been fully repaired, issued a VIV certificate, put through a RWC and re-registered.
Fire in WPI622 (my repaired repairable write-off Disco that i put through the whole re-registering process myself), it shows exactly the same.
They are very strict with repairs having to be done properly before a VIV certificate is issued so if the car is suitably cheap to account for it always listing as a repaired write-off then there should be no reason to run for the hills. They also go into a huge amount of detail to ensure the car is not a re-birth as that's the core purpose of the VIV (vehicle identity verification) so you can be sure that's not going to be the case either if it lists as having been inspected.
Registering in another state shouldn't be an issue as the fact it has been repaired, VIV'd and re-registered in Vic will be visible to them too.

Assuming it is a repairable write off that has been correctly reregistered in victoria it can then be registered in queensland although you have to put it through the repairable writeoff inspections in queensland. I had the same thing with my defender when i purchased it from victoria. Was intially going to cost me around $500 for the inspection but they decided it was exempt in the end so only cost me the phone call to book the inspection and give them my details.
