Friend had a golf GTI he is a VW fan but had some gearbox software issues (apparently common to vw abd Audi DSG gearboexes? lead to delays in acclerqation in traffic etc which he found unnerving easily fixed apparently)) but also the service here in NZ is crap so he was dissapointed in that
He looked at new golf gti etc and decieded to buy Lancer ralliart for $15000 cheaper he suprised me as he is such a VW fan, he said more powerful motoer better handling/braking with FWd on wet roads (does not chew front tyres!!) much less road noise and lots beter spec but more junkier plastics/trim etc, Service is much better which was a factor for him
I loved the TDI golfs myself whah a weapon

There is the Toyota Klueger and Mazda CX7.

VW is bringing out a dual cab with all the trimmings and that will just under $50k, may not be ideal but an option.

Oh, and Golf also has a wagon now and so does the Passat.

I had a M5 and by God was that wuick and the dog leg box is another story but race car.

The Golf with all the trimmings is not cheap, that's a given but it does work well as a daily commuter.

Also the FSI in the Golf which is the Petrol version is pretty good on fuel also, they average 8L/100 real terms where as our diesel does 7L/100 in real world figures with the wifes lead foot and school runs etc.

I guess I think an M3 at under 5 secs to 100, 8:22 around the ring and 252Kw as race car like for what can be a fine daily commuter. But yes they are getting on a bit and service, reliability etc could be an issue but I thought we drove LRs so we don't factor this in when buying cars?? R32 average fuel usage is likely to be more like 12/100 if you like driving, still not bad overall.

Have you looked at the Evos? Rubbish interior but they are supposed to go OK.

My sister in law changed from a Mazda CX7 to a Tdi Golf,he is finding the economy hard to get use to as she went from filling once a week $100 to once a fortnight $60. Pat

The R32 is however half its price, almost same performance and can retain its resale better as its now no longer made and has always been in demand.
I know, I have actually had one.

So the R32 is actually very cheap.

The M3 around Nurburgring at that tempo is with a driver that really knows what he is doing, in a as new car not 10 years old. Still , its one of my favourites.

I think the GTI is also better value but not quite as special.
I also said the R32 is heavy on front tyres and rear brakes not the GTI.

For $55k, the R32 is amazing value, amzingly quick and still very capable to carry family around town.

Well chosen, the only downside is the lack of demerit points you will have after 2 months as the speed alert is very quiet and the noise the car makes so good, you will loose your license in no time.

I sometimes wish I never sold it, the twin pipes in the back by Remus alone was worth it every morning. Good buy mate, great decision and in 2 years if you sell it, after your accounmtant has thr written down value via depreciation below what you will sell it for, you will be paying tax on the profit.
