What breed of dog have I just got?

I'm the same - first thought of a Keeshond cross. But it has broader forehead / jaws and shorter snout than typical of both Kheeshond and Shepherd. Akita/Shepherd is probably a much closer fit.

Bloody nice looking dog though, whatever its origins.

Yep, my thoughts also!!!!!!

Put a little Basenji in its place, thats not an easy task.

Malumutes are one man dogs, they will hero worship their owner that feeds them, often if they go away for a while the dog won't eat and just sit in the corner.
Good on you for rescue of stray and lost dogs, dogs are for life not just xmas and sadly petshop often do not make that clear.

Take the dog to the snow and see a change in character like you never seen before.
I went to snow with a friends malamute and wow, what a difference.
They love it and play forever.
They probably are the direct opposite to the basenji you have.
One bred for winter the other for hunting lions and hot summers.
Oh and they can smell too unlike the basenji that has no odour at all.

Bit of a coincidence but I saw one today almost identical to a T. Same shape, size and colour at the Newman Fortescue Festival. Actually had a chat to the owner who informed me it was a pedigree Alaskan Malamute. Slightly different to the traditional version I had seen previously but the owner did assure me it was a Malamute.
If it is or has Akita in it you will need to be very careful as they are listed on the dangerous dogs breed and can be seized regardless if it is a pure or cross breed. If it is do not admit to it.

Sounds like you know the Basenji's well, not to many people know much about them:D

They have nearly sorted thier teritries now;)
The Basenji is a bit worried about coming inside but with some TLC she's back sleeping on the couch.
As for "fluff", she decided where ever miss 14 goes she has to be there.

a labrador can be on the dangerous dog list thats different to a restricted breed..in which case the Akita is not on it (well at least in NSW), maybe your getting confused with the japanese Tosa

If you have a dangerous dog then yes you need to comply with council regulations to keep it unless hey do seize it and destroy it however the dog has to have done something bad to be put on the dangerous dog list like kill someone or made repeated attempts to attack for that to be the case..so dont worry alien even if your dog did have Akita in it no one is gunna take it away...the pound wouldn't of been able to rehome it if it was a restricted breed or a dangerous dog...as they would be massivly breaking the law
