well just think what if something happens will you be able to fix it yourself will the local mechanic be able to fix it.
Hi,
I am going to be doing some touring around Oz and maybe doing a few runs through and around the centre.
I have settled on getting a Defender.
Now the advice I need is. New or second hand?
If second hand. What model/year? What should I look for in it?
If new. What extras should I get, vehicle wise.
I am not new to recovery, bush driving or offroad, just not sure about setting up a Landy.

If money is not a major issue then new is obviously better. To be more specific about how you might set it up, etc. we would need more details such as sorts of places you plan to visit, how many people, how much you are prepared to rough it, etc. That aside, you could almost take a defender anywhere straight of the show room floor. The obvious sorts of things you need to think about (but not necessarily get) include bullbar, winch, raised air intake, long range fuel tank, driving lights, and UHF radio, for starters.

Setup: check the search function as the answers depend very much on what you want to do, but for general touring its purely a question of what you find practical: the vehicle will do touring without any modification. Just add what you feel you need/want.
Models: I'd say that a late TD5 would be your preferred option if you can afford a new vehicle but plan to travel immediately. If also towing, apparently the 2002/2003 have the best balance of tough drivetrain with more advanced engine management computer.
Many buyers of new Defenders have a 12 month or so period of getting the factory faults fixed. If you are touring immediately, get a second hand one. Due to some engineering changes, the TD5 is probably the more robust example in any case.
