Thread: Snowy mountain hydro scheme, series 1???

Those strip electric heaters with suction caps were accessories that were available through outlets such as Repco up until the early 70s when they seemed to slowly disappear from the shelves - I guess with the common installation of demisters in cars as a standard fit.

I tried to find some for my first series 1 in the late 70s but could not find any.

The tropical roof was made and fitted by myself, as you suggest. It was definitely a SMHEA vehicle, bought from a dealer in Parramatta Rd in 1962. Came with seat belt mounts, but without seat belts (which I fitted as soon as I got it). Kept it for about eighteen months, did a top overhaul on it, and traded it on a Series 2 swb, also ex SMHEA. Both of these had heaters, but no demisters, and I fitted both with electric demisters.

Try posting this on Landrover Owners Club Of Vic (LROCV). Being a member myself I know we have a couple of members who are very savy with the old series vehicles and their history.

Why would you want to do that, when I have a copy of Arthur Garthon's Grenville Motors NSW allocations books. You may not be aware that all the Land Rover vehicles delivered to the SMHEC and later SMHEA were distributed by Grenville Motors Cooma Branch.

You are correct. I was not aware of who delivered the landies and I did not know about you having this book. Had I have known this I would not have posted my earlier suggestion.

I still have one in my shed last used on a VC Valiant about 1984. The suction cups with the BA screws used to be sold by Clark Rubber. The cups would get hard and crack from exposure to sun. The demister used to take a long time to clear a semi-circular patch above the heated strip. I discovered that one had to wire the thing through the ignition circuit rather than plug into the lighter socket. If forgotten, they could flatten a battery .

I have the NSW books which includes all the vehicles delivered to SMHEC/A. The books also list Forestry and El. com but am unable to tell which of those worked on the Snowy scheme although we do know that many did.

No I can't publish the list as Arthur has told me that he does not want the list in general circulation, but I can give owners their individual vehicle's details.
