Hmmm.... topical topic. We are thinking of getting a dog for our farm. Initially thought border collie but not sure f this with 4 kids. ESS is high on our list (top atm).
So... questions are: 1/ good with kids? 2/ hard to keep? 3/ good with animals? 4/ Any good breeders in Victoria?
We have a few acres for it to run about in so it should be OK. Willing ot put in hard yards training too.
Cheers

Hi all
We have a new new addition too, Her name is Ava, and she is 18 weeks old, very smart knows all of the basic commands already, So far is fairly well behaved and I hope she doesn't live up to the name on her papers (Devil Woman).
The best bit is our fat lab is loosing lots of weight as she is constantly on the move for a change due to the pup playing.
Might have to start an AULRO puppy school![]()
cute puppy....we love dogs but our touring habits prevented us getting another after our 45kg German Shepard was put down suffering with cancer..not sure we could go though the pain of that again also

We don't have kids(they have flown the coup),but i recon they would be great with them. They seem very playful,& everyone is a friend.Don't think they would be good guard dogs.
Hard to keep, don't know what you mean
They would be good with most animals, but remember they are a hunting type of dog, always interested in birds, etc. They love being outside in the bush. These last few days she has started hunting when out in the bush, that is going left to right, nose to ground, similar to what GSP's do,& taking a lot more interest in birds,& other wildlife.
Ours is very obedient at the moment & seems very trainable, although she is young,so don't know how she will be when she gets older ,but should be the same. She wants to please as well,as most dogs do.
The ESS,& the WSS are the only breed of sniffer dogs used in the UK.ESS are also the prefered sniffer dogs used by the dog squad here, labrador's are the second. No way are they 'dumb'.
Our's is only a pup,so it is difficult to work out how smart she is,but she is definitely ahead of our 10yr old Sharpei.
Springers are supposed to be the smartest of the Spaniels.
Don't know any breeders down your way, there will probably be an ESS association in Vic,that will have a list of breeders. There were not many pups around here,we got her from a breeder near Grafton, with papers. We weren't after a show dog, just a good pet.
Good luck with your choice
