    I'm turning into a Woosie!

Well I have had the Defender for about 18 months now and its a great vehicle. Have been on a few little treks through the wilderness learning its abilities and limitations. All round an excellent vehicle for off the black stuff but I'm getting tired of it for the everyday commute. That and the gearbox has developed an unhealthy whine So I'm looking at getting a second car to rest the Defender and pull it out for the trips and adventures when needed. Also gives me the chance to do a few jobs on it whilst I don't need it everyday like pulling the gearbox and doing some diagnosis that I'm sure is gonna take me a lot longer than a weekend to perform the required extracation and inspection process.

So I've been looking around at small/medium cars, post 2000, sub $15,000, 4 cylinder around the 2.0l mark with a half decent chassis as I have always enjoyed driving and have possibly contributed to the Dfender gearbox problems with my sometimes "spirited" driving...

    So options. Suggestions??

    Regards Frosty

Well only really ne and my girlfriend most of the time but I am rather a generous fellow and have been known to ferry people around. 4 door is preferable really.

Perhaps, do take a look at a 2002 Subaru Outback.
Wagon body for convenience, 2.5 ltr engine is just great......and ours has clocked up 170k's without missing a beat.(I stand corrected, one CV boot cracked at around 150k, $100 odd dollar repair from memory)......

Get an MX5. Seriously. Fun, fast reliable and cheap to buy and own. If you want to ferry people, use the defender. But for the daily commute, an MX5 is great. You will get some clowns calling it a girls car, but there is a reason there are so many at the race tracks. You already have the practical car for when you need it.

I sold mine about two weeks ago and miss it a little. I couldn't justify keeping it as I have another 'fun and impractical' car that is close to being back on the road.

Dare I to mention a Freelander? Never regretted buying one for my better half.

    Cheers
    Johannes

There are people who spend all weekend cleaning the car.
And there are people who drive Discovery.

Thanks guys, Must say I'm definitely biased towards Subarus. Had a 96 liberty before the Defender and cost me nothing to keep on the road. Handling was mediocre but amazing compared to the truck.

The MX5 has a very compelling argument, A mate goes up to Shepparton for club days tearing up the skid pan and an MX5 would pretty sweet.

The VW's have always been on my list, always liked the 4th Gen Golfs. Especially the GTI with the lil 1.8 turbo that you can get some pretty impressive power out of.

Freelander, looked at but want something that i can rely on and the earlier Freelanders seem a little more suspect to me.
