Thread: Gold Coast 'overdue' for cyclone

Look on the bright side, it keeps all the southerners at home.

My mother lived on the Gold Coast when a cyclone hit in the late forties or early fifties. There was a house where the casino now stands in one photo with only the roof visible due to the water level. Not many people lived down there then would be a much bigger event today.

Meh, it's the Gold Coast Tabloid. A large portion of the GC is below flood level and a fair chunk of the flood plain has been developed. Most of the Gold Coast used to be swampland. There is also a pretty strong rumour that when the flood levels were comverted from imperial to metric, they stuffed up by a foot or so. And not in a good way either.

We had a 1 in 10 year flood 4-6 years ago and lots of houses got wet carpet. There were some good photos around. A proper storm or flood will cause a lot of problems, especially in the 'rich seats'.

After reading the article it looks like media beat up to me.Sure cyclones come down that far,the last I remember was in 1964 when it washed an old WW2 mine up on the beach at Surfers.One cyclone years ago went as far south as Sydney.The chances are pretty slim for getting one, but modern day storms are in the meld and they can cause as much damage as a cyclone.Mostly all we get off the northern cyclones is the rain depressions which happened and caused, along with other things the 1974 floods

If only we could point a cyclone at Sufferer's Paradise. Chances are it would cause several million dollars worth of improvements.

I remember the cyclone that hit between Noosa and Redcliffe on new year's eve 1961, as I was camping at Shorncliffe with my girlfriends parents,we had to drop the tents (big old marques) and tie them down to the vehicles parked between them,I got sent back to Brisbane with somebodies grandma who had several prize birds and pedigree dogs.it also got my austin A40 tourer out of the weather (new roof)

went back up to my parents and sister at Caloundra the next day and recovered their boat (on Trailer) from Pumicestone Passage

Yeah it was a tad wet .
