Andy. Report them immediately to the Ag Dept and they will eradicate them. We don't want any possibility of European wasps getting a foothold in WA as they are a major pest.
They will sting without provocation.
As a boy back in the UK we thought it was great fun to put a lit banger firework into the holes they use for their nests.... great fun until they swarmed out in a rage and I got stung many times.:(
Do not delay with this as they spread like wildfire.

Dunno where I saw it but I do recall seeing somewhere that the local shire office wanted to be informed of european wasps as they are not native and are monitoring the spread.
But anyhow...........
I can also concur that a wasp sting is pretty bloody painful.
We had a nest twice, first time I just emptied a can of cheap fly killer onto the nest. Next time I used the flame thrower tactic of igniting an aerosol of something combustable.
Both worked 100%
Andy ... I was stung by some of these ****ers who were nesting in our outdoor pvc pipe racks ... Garry's right ... I hade 3 huge red hard lumps on my leg for almost 3 months, and even after they went down the area was still hard to the touch, and itchy as all **** for ages after.
Got a bee suite ? .... hat, cover your face, long sleeves and legs, gloves ... several layers ... you DON'T want to be stung.

Felt sorry for them,they didnt even get annoyed when Ive been removing steel from the rack.
I will monitor them and dose the nests again if I see any more around.

When I was rebuilding the rear X member of my 101 I found two living inside where it joins the chassis.
A couple of weeks back I took off the brake drums of a series 1 axle I have lying around in the back yard and each of the drums had a wasp inside.
When I was in the UK living outdoors was almost impossible. They love sugar so climb into soft drink cans and when you drink you get stung in the throat - bad news. Also they hang around all the rubbish bins and get you when you throw a can into the bin - they will eat meat and will get your dog when the wasp is eaten with the doggie food.
You know what flys a like around a barbie on a hot summer day - well just imagine if each one had a huge stinger to make your life misery for months - well that is what it will be like in Aust if they get a foothold which is slowly happening.

Maybe they are European wasps, maybe not. The antennae on their heads are supposed to be entirely black. Your's look yellow. Have look here http://www.agric.wa.gov.au/objtwr/im.../pw/waspid.pdf
And if you do get stung the CSIRO advises "follow this advice from 400 years ago: 'If any venomous beast, by his sting or biting have caused your flesh to rise…put upon the stung place the dung of a cow or ox very hot'."
So I'll get my shovel and go looking for a cow to get a fresh one before taking the wasps on. :D

When I was over there staying at Quinns Rocks Caravan Park,critters exactly the same as those were nesting in one of the power boxes.The manager of the park contacted the Joondalup Shire Council who came out and said that they were not European wasps but some other variety.When they left we zapped the buggers anyway,they looked too deadly for us.
