Skybus is how I did it a couple of years ago. Pretty exciting stuff though, they don't poke along slowly and unless you are first on board there is a good chance you will be standing up.

southern cross station (spencer street in the old days) is western side of the cbd, tram down burke street and or a walk will get you most places in cbd in 15-20 min.

And there is also the free "city circle" tram that runs around the cbd that you can hop on and off from.
