    Hard day at work...

Have you ever had that feeling at work that there is simply not enough of you go around to help everyone, fix all the problems, and essentially "keep afloat" of the workload? That was today for me.

I'm a parts interpretor/technical advisor, and oversee all of the motorbike customers & their machines. I learned I was flying solo in the department for the first half of the day...yay. I knew it was going to be a hard day when I had 6 mechanics waving R/O's in my face from the second I sat down and the phone was ringing off the hook at the same time. I got the boys in the workshop sorted and that bought me some time to play catch-up, or so I thought!

The phone and fax machine kept ringing incessantly, fed by an endless assault of smash repairers, joe-public chasing trivial things, other workshops in town wanting stuff, random follow-up calls on stuff, etc. This continued the entire day. I write down details on every call, n counted 76 by knock off time.

Throughout the day, I had 5 abusive customers come in and rip me a new one over stuff-ups which were done well prior to me starting employment there 2 months ago (today was the first I knew of these btw). I tried my best to solve their issues on the spot, but 2 were overly abusive and basically bent me over undeservedly, one even went as far as threatening me personally, despite being 110% professional and courteous. Wtf?!

I had a loyal customer give me half a spray for not returning his call within 5 mins, so that meant shoving everything aside to keep on his good side (thankfully he only needed one of the two quotes done on the spot), but he was good enough to thank me for "continuing my excellent service to him", and apologised for his "test" as I'm the new'ish guy. *Sigh*

Literally, for every job which left my desk, there were 3 which replaced it, and I was completely overwhelmed the entire day. I had a snack (aka lunch) at 4:30 while serving an understanding customer who saw how bad I was being smashed, and he returned later with a 6-pack for me to unwind later.

Today has really whacked me around on new levels tbh. Darwin's renowned for ****e service and work ethic, but I've been pushing hard and giving it my all at work. I have had a large number of customers send in letters of positive feedback to my manager about how well I have served them and ensured they leave with everything done, yet today has just whipped me hard and nothing was seemingly good enough. Deflated sums me up atm!

Aaahhhhh the Build Up - don't ya just love it!

Seriously though - unfortunately you do get people like that and it makes it damn hard when you are trying to do the right thing by them.

Remember the guy with who came back with the 6 pack as he will be one to tell people what a great job you are doing.

BTW - how long have you been in Darwin?

Hahaha I had a hard day at work too. My first encounter of the day was being called a (swear filter get ready...) lying bull****ting asshole. Then followed by being spat at.

In comes a colleague, he gets called a filth asian ****ing ****, a whole load of the person then screaming rape and generally just howling.

But then again, when you work in a hospital, and the person involved is in her 90's with severe dementia and delerium, not sure she was quite aware what she was doing, poor little dear. It went on for over an hour though.

All in all it was just one of those days...

    G'day El Duderino

Gee, that sounds like an average day as a parts interpeter/phone person in the great days of Leyland Aust. in the 60's and 70's in the big smoke everything wanted yesterday if not sooner, and what you put on their order/invoice was not in any way, shape,or form as to what the warehouse staff dispatched but, we heard about it when it arrived well the part No's looked alike was their defence

    cheers

I know how you feel mate. At work we have a general station assistant who helps answer phones and take counter enquiries that dont need the services of a sworn officer. On many occasions there isnt one rostered so when you turn up, mainly on week days, and there isnt one rostered on you know you are going to get smashed cause you need to answer the phone, and serve at the counter all on your own. Not so bad when people come in for quick jobs, but when someone wants to make a report it can take half an hour or so sometimes, even longer if you need to take a statement.

It makes going home and sitting down that much nicer though, and it passes the time quicker than having nothing to do.

I take 000 calls for a living and nothing bugs me more than getting abused by some twit with a cut finger or some over piddly problem that needs a bandaid or a can of HTFU not an ambulance.

I often tell people that I would have a great job if it wasnt for "people" ruining it.

    hard day at work

Dont despair, take a deep breath, fill the esky, and head to tumbling waters for some [ V.B., XXXX, CARLTON or other of your choice] therapy --- assuming it's still there. Tumbling Waters was the place to go in the Eighties when I`was in Darwin when the build up was on. Dont let the turkeys get you down,
