Non Land Rover Cylinder Head Question?

Ok, so after a plethora of things has gone wrong with Stacey's Pajero, the head gasket now appears to be gone aswell, well at least one of them has.

I am in the process of slowly stripping everything off the engine so i can get to the heads and take them both off. Is it a mandatory thing to have the heads shaved (what ever the term is) when you do head gaskets? Or can I check the surface of the heads with a steel ruler to make sure they are still flat and bolt them back down at the correct torque settings with new gaskets?

Thing is we will be selling the car soon I dont want to spend unecessary money on the car. Having said that I want to do the job right so if they need to be done then I'll get the heads done.

Checking for flatness is mandatory, I don't know how stiff your steel ruler is, some are a bit floppy or crooked. You are looking to grip the thinnest feeler gauge anywhere across the head, i.e. flatness within 0.002" or so.

It's not manditory, but a good idea. Shaved, surfaced, same thing. If you have them surfaced you can also get them crack tested, a real good idea if it has been hot.

Thanks guys, the engine hasnt been overheated or anything like that, the gasket has just let go and the engine is using coolant, coolant isnt dropping on the ground and the heatcore leak seems to have been sorted by the bars leak. There appears to be a bit of oil mixing with the coolant aswell.

I bought a 60cmx40cm steel builders square today, figures it might be a bit more rigid and accurate to check the flatness. I have a set of feeler gauges so I'll give it a good check before i decide.

Any idea what it would cost to get 2 v6 cylinder heads shaved, provided thats all that needs doing to them.

Lets hope not, I'll have the heads off on saturday, will inspect them and see what they are like, and go from there.

Will try and ring old mate tomorrow and see how much aswell.

Well, got the heads off today, both head gaskets look to be buggered, starting to de-laminate and the bottom side of the gasket was well and truly stuck to the head, a fair bit of the gasket was left behind when it came off.

Looks like the heads have been done before and Dodgy brothers incorporated put them back on. There was a nut missing from one of the exhaust manifold bolts and the whole passenger side wasnt done up tight.

Spoke to an engineering place here in town and they can do each head for about $8o the pair. It looks like one of the heads has been welded before so im going to get them checked over for sure. Bores are in good condition which is good.

Once the heads were off i got stuck into the heater core, stuff me what a job, total pain in the arse. I hate working on dash boards.
