    Oh and if you think a Defender will pull a 40'+ fifth wheel trailer at 75mph over the high altitude passes up the Rocky Mountains, you are definitely smoking something buddy!

    guys the cars are so different its hard to compare. As stated I am not a fan of usa cars, but these fords can do jobs small 4x4's can only dream of, and if you require massive size and power then they are ideal. I think a much better comparison to these fords is not the defender with the manual box but the turbo diesel v8 range rover, now you have similar power, comfort and towing.

    well said F4... if only everyone knew which company makes the impressive modern Common Rail turbo diesel engines for Range Rover (including the new 4.4L V8 TD). Both companies seemed to benefit a lot in their products from that previous ownership.

    urrm neither will your ford f150, max legal towed weight is 6990lb according to the ford website anyway the GCVM might be nearer tp 17000lb but only if you order all the special heavy duty toys... and Im also fairly certain that 75MPH is above the legal speed limit if you're towing in most places...

    for those of us who speak metric thats 3.1something ton and 120kph.... hold on.. .um isnt the deefer rated to 3.5 t....

    and after watching the vids they dont hit the magic 10/100 because they're carrying load, they go close but they just dont get there, well not in the petrol engine anyway.

    I hate it when these threads turn into a ****ing contest. Different strokes for different folks. I reckon I can find all sorts of trucks from various corners of the world that will challenge the ubiquitous Deefer....... but I can't be bothered

    I agree Wardy, I don't think this thread was supposed to take away anything from the Defender. I just like seeing some new technology, and looks like Ford is trying to at least prove that it is tough and durable.
    If you know how tough the EPA is on diesels on the US, you would know why it built this EcoBoost. The diesel upgrade on the heavy duty trucks is about $8,000. Mainly because of the tough emissions.
    Blknight, just as you know how to speak non-metric, I can also speak metric. Trust me, a Defender won't pull it's 3500kg without slowing down, downshifting and eventually crawling to get over some of these passes around here. I'm not saying a Defender isn't good for what its intended purposes, because I would love to have one. But towing at speeds on the highway isn't it. I don't know why anyone would want to dispute that.
    Anyway, back to what Wardy was saying. It's stupid turning this in to a fight. Somebody told me to check this website out because he said everyone on here liked all sorts of 4x4s, unlike Exploroz which is full of Toyota fanboys. I like all sorts of 4x4s (except Toyotas). Hope I came to the right place.

    of course we like all kinds of 4x4's....... they make even freelanders look good without having to try!

    as for the "lifetime of use" that the engine is put through in the dyno cell, i'd love to see one after 150,000 miles/240,000km in the real world.....

    If you think Freelanders are good... each to their own I guess. My brother had one, it was a POS in every single way. As for the 240,000km in the real world, I agree with that. I understand why manufacturers often have to simulate it though. A bit hard to do it in one day, so only time will tell there.

    Might be a great engine, but Ford themselves are a pain in the arse to deal with, I would NEVER buy a new car/4x4/truck from Ford ever again

    I believe ford did put it through 150,000 km, BUT I bet they did not stop the engine, wait for it to go stone cold, start it, and drive it hard about 2500 times during the test. They most likley drove the 150,000 km in one long stint, probably changed the engine oil a lot, and also would have done perfect servicing, assuming of course that their customers would also do this. So I think the real world would also be tougher on the engine.
