Scrap metal value of a LWB series 3

Now before you all get antzy, please read.

I am considering buying a parts vehicle for my lwb SIII hardtop. There are only some bits I need and I want to be able to get rid of the rest, one way or another. Assuming I can wreck/sell some of the stuff I don't need or can't use like the rear doors etc since mine is a 2 door, what is one of these worth as scrap steel and alloy assuming I pull it apart? I will keep stuff I can use like the gearbox and transfer (never know when you might need one of them) but most of the other bits are not exactly highly sought after except when you can find someone who needs a specific part. I just want to make sure that I can make back the cost of the vehicle which sadly is too bad to fix up, but not end up with a huge pile of hoarded stuff or a rusting and corroding hulk in the front yard.

Do scrap yards even buy steel anymore?

Be worth ringing around. I know they will come and pick them up for free. I got rid of 5 old wrecks once, they were there within an hour of the call, no money for them, but the satisfaction of a clean yard was there!!

If you do get a wreck, once you have the bits you need off it, why not offer the rest to members who might need other bits, give perhaps 2 weeks for them to come and get the bits, then get the scrappy in?

I got over $200 per tonne (20c/kg) for heavy steel last week. It could go down in price as the Chinese stock market just slumped. Heavy steel is stuff like diffs chassis etc but no body panels glass or seats. But you have to take it to the scrap yard for that price and ring them first for a firm quote. Aluminium (clean) is more like 60c/kg but must be completely free from steel at that price.

Mate i doubt it ... there happy to sell it on at exorbitant price's (no malice in that just stating fact )... but arnt willing to part with decent cash for you .... for example was told that i wouldnt get more than 800 for my 98 disco for a wreckers to part out.....jjjs the rims are worth more than that!!!!.....saying that, Ive also been in the position where the swmbo would no longer tolerate the S2 in the front yard ...and the small amount of cash i took for some lucky bugger to take it away was worth more than the grieff from the swmbo!!!...lol

Locally (Adelaide) cars are going for about $175 a ton

I offered a running but bad BECM 4.6 P38 with below average interior and body to a local wreckers and they offered me less than $800 mentioned for the disco in this thread....

Just over a decade ago that vehicle would have been worth around $100K, depreciation is a buggar. You'd have been better buying a Defender!

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

The stuff I want to keep from it is things like the rear springs (so I can rebuild a spare set and swap mine out if needed), things like some of the interior parts and such, but the chassis is rusty as many of them are and the rear sections and rear doors and tailgate door will not suit as mine is a 2 door and the potential donor car is a 4 door. Obviously good rear doors without rust should be saleable, front doors would make good spares or could sell, wheels and diffs can fit behind the shed under a tarp or be sold as required but the rest can only be scrapped or sold for parts (maybe the roof with some rope tied to it would make a great sand taboggan towed behind the series 3)

I guess a rusted out chassis isn't much use to anyone but can be cut up, put in the back of a SIII and dumped or scrapped, I suppose there would be a market for a non rusty firewall if it has that but not crossing fingers on that one.

How many kilos of aluminium is in a series 3?
