now for an update:

What happened was, the universal joint on the front Prop Shaft closest to the gearbox just disintegrated. the prop shaft then bashed around under the car(was doing about 120k when it gave way)

on first inspection it just looked like ti damaged the exhaust and the sump on the gearbox. on closer inspection, this wasn't the case.

the prop shaft has smashed against the side of the gearbox and bend the gearbox housing just above where the sump seal in. this has produced a major leak, so a new gearbox is required.

the vehicle is now in Perth at 'Jordon Rovertech' and Kevin is going to replace the gearbox with a reco and a new front shaft. apart from this he reckons the car is in good order.

if all goes well, i will be continuing my travels from Perth to Newcastle starting on the 23rd of December. hopefully there will be no further surprises.

now a little off topic. i am moving to Brisbane in January, does anyone know if there is a Landy Club on the Northside of Brisbane. i am hankering for some 4wding.

once again, thanks to all those involved. it has given me faith that their are people out there who are willing to help a perfect stranger(strangers to me at least) when they are in need.

Darren, there are a few downsides to owning a Land Rover, but they are certainly offset by the quality and compassion and the willingness to help out a fellow Land Rover owner (and others as well).

The Land Rover Owners Club of Brisbane (LROC

is a good club and based in brisbane, but they meet on the southside (Rocklea). I belive there is a (small) sunshine coast LR club. There is also a Gold coast club. LROCB and GCLRO have sub forums in the club section.

Unfortunately there is no LR Club based in the Northside of Brisbane. However, there are quite a few Landie owners who live on the north side. Where abouts on the north side are you moving to? I live in Scarborough and know of at least two other members on here who live on the peninsula. There is also a member at Bracken Ridge.
Maybe we should look at setting up a subsidury club to LROC Brisbane based on the North side?

How many clubs do we need???

There is no necessity to attend meetings - the trips are more fun anyway!

I did not mention starting a new club, just a subsidury of the existing club but, with meetings on the North side of Brisbane.
The idea was for those North of Brisbane to get together without necessariy going on a trip.

Hi all, Devilmanv8 picked up his disco in perth and has headed home to NSW after having the damaged transmission replaced with a reconditioned one at about $5,OOO had trouble last night and Eucla and found leaking oil from cooler pipe at transmission, and is now approaching Ceduna SA, and the transmission warning light keeps coming on. Has go under it and checked oil level and it is full. He says the ambient temperature is 40 degrees and we feel that the transmission oil is overheating????. He is towing an aluminium camper trailer with a bit of gear on board and estimates the tow load to be a little over a ton. THere is no transmission cooler fitted to the vehicle.

Anyone had experience with trans overheating in series ll discovery. Any advice on what to do/continuing journey/driving at night in the cool etc.

Because light is on will this damage transmission? We dont have much knowledge or experience with Landrovers so am seeking your input and advice.

Anyone in Ceduna he can talk to. My sons name is Darren and he is on UHF-40 and is currently about 15 minutes out coming into Ceduna

yep if its over heating, cog down slow down and ease up the load on the TC...

better to run in 3 locked than 4th cooked.

running at night/early morning will help. the exisiting cooler may be blocked and in need of flushing.

The hotter it gets the more chance of damage. Worst case is it will burn the clutch packs out causing the box to slip and make more heat till it then has no drive. Best bet it keep the speed right down and avoid top gear. Lock it in 3rd by the shifter. Also watch the engine temp guage and check the fluid levels every few hours. He ahould be able to notice the engine reving if it starts to slip.

Thanks guys. I rang Pat303 and he told me to get Darren to select 3rd gear on the shifter and run it at about 90 to 100ks and you guys have confirmed what he told us.
Darren has been this for the past hour or so and he said that all seems to be ok. He is going to drive on as far as he can in the cool of the evening so hopefully that will help too. They are predicting temps in the high 20s in NSW for Christmas day so that may also help him. When he gets home to Newcastle he is selling the trailer but I think it will still be a good idea to fit a trans cooler anyway, after all they dont cost much and take bugger all to fit.

Hi all hope you all had a very merry christmas.

Just advising that my Son (Devilmanv8) (Theres a story behind this name going back to when he was a kid his grandmother named him a Tassie Devil so he has just kept that going it seems, Nan died a few years ago.

Sorry I got off track, he had no more trouble with transmission but after leaving Broken Hill Christmas day of all days, lost a nut off the exhaust flange and reckons that when that happened the fuel consumption was horrendous. Got to Cobar and finally got the NRMA bloke to open up and get some exhaust cement and a couple of nuts and a did a temporary repair, still could not get a feed anywhere, had not eaten since the morning of Christmas eve at Eucla, apart from a packet of smiths chips at Broken Hill. Reckons when he got to Gilgndra at about 8pm christmas day he had the best hamburger he has ever tasted, I guess after almost 2 days it would tase pretty good. Hell I think I would even eat a Maccas burger after that time (well maybe?).

Finally got the disco home to Newcastle at 1.30am boxing day and it is now safely parked in my yard. It cant break down there hopefully. Son has had couple of days at home and has now jumped into his SV8 commodore and headed to Brisane to have a holiday. I reckon he and his mate Mick will play up a little and probably have quite a few xxxx'x

Thanks guys for all the assistance we got on this marathon trip which started about 4 weeks ago and has had saga after saga after about the first 2 hours out of Port Hedland. Have a great New Year.
