    Protest against WikiLeaks arrest

As critics protest against the "shonky" way WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been denied his freedom, diplomatic sources have reportedly revealed informal talks are underway for him to be transferred into US custody.
US and Swedish officials have already discussed the possibility of Assange being delivered into the hands of US law enforcement to face potential charges over "espionage offences", Britain's The Independent reported, citing "diplomatic sources".
The espionage claims relate to Assange releasing hundreds of thousands of confidential US State Department cables, not the sexual misconduct accusations being investigated in Sweden. Right-wing politicians such as former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin say Assange should be pursued in the same way as terrorist leaders.

This guy is not a fool and obviously very brave. He would have been well aware of what he was getting into when he kick started wikileaks.
Each to their own but I can't really understand people not supporting him especially if we put any value on REAL democracy and REAL freedom.
I think this guy is a hero, a real one.

I think it's good to see dodgy dealings and pure incompetance exposed, but total release of all facts and events can start a chain reaction that will hurt servicemen that are following legal orders and often innocents that are in the wrong place at the wrong time.

    It's a tuff topic........

Now times that by 4 - as thats only about a quarter of all the currently actively mirrors.

Whilst I can't really comment on what I think of Assange's arrest (who really knows all the facts regarding what he was arrested for, let alone just how much involvement he has over WikiLeaks - it sure isn't just him involved).

I just can't help to question nation's reactions to it - they must have a LOT to hide for them to justify their responses. A la USA - we'll create new laws to charge him under if we have to!

The front page of the West Australian today - "World's Most Wanted Man Arrested." I never realised Assange was the world's most wanted. I must be behind in the times!

    WikiLeaks supporters attack websites

US officials have directed their ire at Assange but even some American allies have begun to ask whether Washington shares the blame.
"The core of all this lies with the failure of the government of the United States to properly protect its own diplomatic communications," Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd said Wednesday.
"To have several million people on their distribution list for a quarter of a million cables - that's where the problem lies."
Sounds more like a forum to me... Go Kev...

I'm not going to agree with you one this, the leaks while significant in volume were not stolen by Assange and are less damaging than the Watergate tapes or the Pentagon papers. The result of those disclosures led to more open and transperent governments World-wide. Transperency that has been pushed aside since 11th September 2001.

What seems to be included in much of the cables so-far released is little more than gossip, that most of us knew or suspected of the individuals named. Worse still is that we now have a supposedly competent lawyer and our Prime Minister making statements about illegal activities yet the issues of cablegate are yet to go anywhere near a court of law. We have others in the US calling for the assasination of Assange and Wikileaks a Terrorist organisation, yet The Age, The Guardian, The New York Times are considered profesional media organisations. If we don't hold our politicians, diplomats and militaries to a higher standard of conduct than that the gossip that has been revealed and we find them contributing to the current hysteria, then we are hardly better than the real terrorist organisations we find ourselves battling against.

Well that's my take on it all.
    X2

I guess it's a lot easier for the US government to shoot the messenger, and do so in a loud, public and hysterical way in the hope that accountability for its own incompetance and lack of security in storing these documents is lost in the ensuing frenzy.

    Protest against WikiLeaks arrest
    More from that source:

[Phillip Adams, an ABC radio presenter and member of the WikiLeaks Advisory Board, said] "Why the world is so rushing to condemn and to throw around words like 'treason', which are clearly inapplicable to a young Australian, astonishes me. I think the reaction around the world is bizarre, absolutely bizarre," he said.

    ...

"I think if Julian's completely taken out of the picture the organisation will grind on in its mysterious hydra-headed way. Despite all the various attempts to cut it off at the knees and legs, it will continue to flourish and embarrass, and good on it," Adams said.

"I'd be advising WikiLeaks to up the ante and to keep leaking and to demonstrate that it's bigger than Julian Assange."
Governments have used technology for decades to build webs of deceit and lies. Now when technology is being used to uncover them they don't like it. For a society to be truly democratic (which a certain government keeps reminding the world it needs) the population requires education and access to the truth. If when they block that access then they are shown to be truly undemocratic.

Until the 16th century the papacy controlled access to information too, but certain rebels such as Martin Luther argued for open and free access to written sources so that they could make up their own mind about what they believed. This and the spread of printed works through Europe triggered the Enlightenment. The orthodoxy failed then and it will again.

I suppose I am a fence sitter on this one.
Got to give Assange credit, the man must have big kahunas! Not sure if I would like to **** off Mr "Peace through superior firepower"!
I suppose my only concern is, picture this hypothetical: A document is leaked that says something like "Hey, how about them -insert derogatory remark about an Afghani-" all of a sudden, some Afghani reads this and thinks "bugger you lot then if that's the way you feel!" and you can imagine the adverse effect to the "hearts and minds" operations through out the world... and you may have upset a person who was considering joining the taliban (for example) and now does.
Sometimes a simple comment can have a massive effect on a general population...
On the other hand, it looks like just about every politician has said something questionable about every other politician so they may all have a bit of egg on their faces and it is all being blown out of proportion... who knows?
My old boss used to say "tell some one to **** off and then write them a nice e-mail!" wise words...

I know you are serious but really??? A hero??? I think not.

My heroes stand in front of a 40 foot wall of flame with a hose with barely enough pressure to splash your boots; or they jump into a swollen river to pull a kid out that's been washed away; or toil for years on a property that's not seen rain for a decade, and when it does rain, it's a flood...I could go on.
