To Lock or Not to Lock

Bound up OR on full lock.

The rover design only has lock stops on one side of the wheel (so one wheel is always limited by the track rod). IRC there were people who were breaking bells and/or popping out balls at full lock offroad. The thinking was that under certain situations the track rod flexes enough for the CV to turn more than it should.

Either way, IME, breaking CVs in an unlocked vehicle is much less common than breaking CVs in a locked vehicle.

They could have just supplied 1 new axle ;)

MD literature stated that new axles were needed as having a locker increased stresses on the axles.

Indeed they could but if you're going to the trouble of making one you may aswell make the simpler one too, and then add it as a feature of your product....

I agree there are circumstances that would make a locked car more likely to break something but there are probably more situations where it would stop or reduce the risk of things breaking....

I think if you are a controlled driver, there is less chance of breaking something with a locked vehicle because you need so much less effort to get to the same place as open diff vehicles.

I doubt there would be many people who have had a locker and not want one or two in their next vehicle.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't be without lockers.

However, I know plenty of people who only started breaking things after fitting them. E.g. Aquarangie (IRC) drove for ages with 33's and standard RRC 10-spline rear axles. He installed a rear ARB with the same axles and tyres and snapped BOTH rear halfshafts on his first trip out.

Note - same driver, same driving style, same vehicle.

I put lockers in to make it easier on the D2 when towing the camper off road.... and it DID!
Being able to idle over rocks and ruts has saved us from having to deliberately pound our way up a fair number of tracks. We use the rear locker often and the front occassionally....
Well we USED to, lol. Soon they will be in my newie:D
Pre lockers, we damaged a front diff (needing a new centre) and totally destroyed a rear (after disconnecting the rear tail shaft, we needed to get home so drove through all the bangs, grinds and smashes from the rear of the car:twisted:).
We've done similar tracks with the lockers in and been extremely happy at the lack of stress on the drive train..... you can almost here it saying 'thankyou' LOL:D
