I'd expect that the Pajero will actually be more capable off-road than the D1 that it is replacing. D1 with open diffs vs Pajero with traction control and rear difflock. On road will be better too.

But if you were referring to leaving large amounts of oil in the driveway then you are probably right.

    nissan 01

the patrol would be the only option full stop. i drive a td42 telstra spec daily, and cannot fault it. good offroad in 2wd excellent in 4wd have not bogged it yet, i am the towing service for the ford ranger drivers in my local team. the 3l motor had troubles when first bought out but problems have been ironed out, and theres talk of a v6 for the patrol next yr. if you consider the patrol ask around the local patrol owners to see if the dealer mechanics are oil and filter guys or they know what their on about. that's the biggest problem with nissan, poorly trained dopes that know jack, and the 3l's that have had trouble, are because of the that.

I would wait for the new Ford Ranger. From all reports it will be a good vehicle.

Best mates Nissan 3L just blew3 weeks ago, melted a whole in no 3 piston and cracked it.
they did full repair under warranty as car was just out of its 5 year factory warranty.
Its for sale now as he does not trust it any more, done 50k km's.
I would go Ranger or s Pajero if I really had no choice.
    Hilux be nice too.
    good luck.

Out of your list I would suggest the Mitsubishi pajero, It is a much nicer every day car than a nissan patrol and will be more reliable. Plus Mitsubishi have a 5 year warranty (or 10 year non transferable drive train warranty)
meaning trouble free motoring, especially if you are planning to keep for 5+ years

Ranger or the Patrol would be my pick..proven solid basic rigs. Pajero's a good vehicle, but I don't trust electronics (which it relies on heavily)...I wouldn't put one near water tbh.

How much bigger is the new ranger? I had the old one at work and while I liked the car it was very small in the cabin.

Given it will be doing commuting duties I would personally skip the whole ute with a canopy thing. Fantastic for messy trips but uncomfortable and cumbersome in the city. Give me a wagon with rubber mats and a cargo barrier any day

    Cheers

Looking at the spec sheets, one that has not been mentioned here is the new navara(and pathfinder)st550 model coming next year with a 3.0 v6 turbo diesel with 170kw,550nm auto and all the gear I'm just not 100% on the price.(it's rumoured in the articles at between $55-60,990k but you would get fleet discount which would chop a good slice down to hopefully below luxury tax level)Nissan Navara ST-X 550 - First drive: V6 diesel pumps up Nissan Navara, Pathie | GoAuto

Now would LR stop stuffing us around with the to much power excuse for the defender and put a decent v6td in PLEASE! You've got a SMALLER rear LEAF sprung nissan with a donk putting out virtually the same power as the 3.0 in the disco. If Nissan believe the market will shell out roughly $8-10k more for the better engine/gearbox dont LR think we would do the same for a terrain response auto/3.0td V6 combo in a defender?

Been a long time fan/owner of patrols but when they droped the td42 I would not touch one. The Pajero gets my vote however would buy a late model 2nd hand one as resale value will take a big hit on a new one. As for jeep I own a wrangler for last 4 years and has been a bloody good car very reliable however too small and loves fuel way too much.
