This is a great thread but really needs some pictures! I'd be especially keen to see details of winch mounts on Series II and III Landy's.
A few have mentioned High Mounts and I reckon it'd be good to see those mounted up too. Get snapping.
I have a 9000lb winch I bought from REPCO a few years ago (can't remember what brand it is) and have used on my Nissan a few times. Same as most it seems I have used it for dragging fallen trees to clear tracks, pulling trees out of ground at home and at my sisters place and rescuing other people. Only once did I need it to get myself out.
As I'm going to sell the Nissan I'd be interested in mounting it up to the Series 2A but it'll be a while before I get to that as there will be quite a bit of fabrication required to make a decent bracket to chassis mount it.
    Cheers

Synthetic rope can jam between the pulley wheel and the side plate in the more common type of snatch blocks such as this one:

The best snatch block for synthetic rope is this type where, because of its design, the rope is less likely to slip between the pulley and a side plate:

Threoretically, with synthetic rope you could use a smaller diameter pulley but most snatch blocks are built to a size to suite steel cable.

Low mounts don't use worm drives unless they are a Ramsey/Thomas

On the other hand, I have no idea on currents draws comparative the planetry set in a low mount

Karl, is there a non ARB priced version available?

JohnB: mounting to a S2/3 isn't that hard. You can mount it to the chassis on an extension moving the bumper forward as I've seen some Thomas etc mounts or with the reduced sized of elec winches these days and even with a high mount you could mount it directly behind the bumper.

We had a flat piece of 3/8 plate with some "wings" welded to it to make a C section that fitted over the outside of the bumper top/bottom and stood vertically high/low enough to locate the cable out central on the bumper and bolt the winch behind it.
