Most of the ideas on this show are dreamed up by faceless writers and producers.

Apart from the comic timing and ad libs these guys are "puppets" just along for the ride.

One of the advantages of a discussion like this is that it helps clarify your own thinking.

    Some things I wasn't doing:

I wasn't having a go at Top Gear. They might deserve it, but I wasn't doing it.
I wasn't saying that having a humourous look at something is wrong ... it isn't, though some humour goes too far. But I wasn't commenting on that.
I wasn't having a go at anyone's point of view. I might disagree with some points of view expressed, but I wasn't doing that.

All I was commenting on was the double standard that was evident in the comments ...

The point I have been trying to make is that 'tolerance' as an ethical standard, doesn't work. As soon as you insist that everyone must be tolerant ... you immediately break your own standard, because then you become intolerant of anyone who doesn't want to be tolerant. So you are no longer tolerant!

That is why I mentioned a double standard. You can't insist on tolerance from everyone else without becoming intolerant yourself.

justinc, I am with you 100% on the work your friends do in Burma.

    Fair comment!

I am quite aware that I am intolerant of many things, such as lies, bull**** and hate based on race, creed or colour. Being told I am intolerant isn't news, its a bit like telling me the earth orbits the sun. It doesn't stop me wanting to apply my moral standards elsewhere. "Insistence" is a bit strong. "Wishing more people were like me" is more like it. It is what makes me human.
Hey, I resent people demanding the death penalty for thought crimes against their favourite superstitions. Is that too much to ask for?

Cheers to you all and thanks to you Willem for stirring up so many grotty bits of humour.

I love it, some people need to lighten up.

Not good to see May get injured like that, what the hell was he doing holding the strap for god sake. As above I am surpirsed they dont get injured more often. Look at Hammonds 200mph prang a few years back. They must have 9 lives.
