I used to work nights, I feel your pain mate.

I tried everything in the end I even tried staring into a bright light for 2 minutes to exhaust the eyes.

Got prescribed some 'Tramyl' once after a knee operation. Can't remember if it helped with the pain, but 'like wow man it was great ****!'. Just took one and I was in fantasy land, SWMBO (nurse) twigged straight away, confiscated the rest and told me to suck it up and put up with the pain. Get some of this stuff and you won't care about the pain.

Deano < I think it's tramadol you are talking about.
One of my specialists was considering it for me, but my pain specialist said he would rather not perscribe any addictive opiates to me yet. Also it doesn't mix with anti depressant drugs, the specialist was suggesting another bout in hospital for another week on ketamine infusion might be the case.
Morphine is some thing he would like to get me hooked on.

as for tramadol,
Tramadol

Generic Name: tramadol (TRAM a dol)
Brand names: Rybix ODT, Ryzolt, Ultram
What is tramadol?

<script type="text/javascript" charset="ISO-8859-1" src="http://as.webmd.com/js.ng/Params.richmedia=yes&amp;transactionID=1797133 7&amp;tile=17971337&amp;site=2&amp;aff iliate=38&amp;xpg=1661&amp;pos=121">&lt ;/script>

Tramadol is a narcotic-like pain reliever.
Tramadol is used to treat moderate to severe pain. Tramadol extended-release is used to treat moderate to severe chronic pain when treatment is needed around the clock.
Tramadol may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Important information about tramadol

You should not take tramadol if you have ever been addicted to drugs or alcohol.
Seizures (convulsions) have occurred in some people taking tramadol. You may be more likely to have a seizure while taking tramadol if you have a history of seizures or head injury, a metabolic disorder, or if you are taking certain medicines such as antidepressants, muscle relaxers, or medicine for nausea and vomiting.
Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine. A tramadol overdose can be fatal. Overdose symptoms may include drowsiness, shallow breathing, slow heartbeat, extreme weakness, cold or clammy skin, feeling light-headed, fainting, or coma. Tramadol may be habit-forming.
Tell your doctor if you feel the medicine is not working as well in relieving your pain. Never share tramadol with another person, especially someone with a history of drug abuse or addiction. Keep the medication in a place where others cannot get to it.
Tramadol may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert. Do not stop using tramadol suddenly, or you could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, sweating, nausea, diarrhea, tremors, chills, hallucinations, trouble sleeping, or breathing problems. Talk to your doctor about how to avoid withdrawal symptoms when stopping the medication.
Do not crush the tramadol tablet. This medicine is for oral (by mouth) use only. Powder from a crushed tablet should not be inhaled or diluted with liquid and injected into the body. Using this medicine by inhalation or injection can cause life-threatening side effects, overdose, or death.

I was on them once, for a neck injury. Far from being a pleasant high, I felt like a vegetable, I could barely walk around the house without knocking things over, had trouble with simple things, but the neck pain went away. Unfortunately the neck pain is back and I might need to go back on them.

I reckon you're right. Interesting about the taking drugs thing. I think I must be about the only person who ever went to uni/senior tech. in 1970/1971 who didn't smoke pot or take any drugs. I was too **** scared to do so as I was afraid I might like it. A good friend of mine who was right into it died after using opiated hash and I wasn't prepared to test my resolve in being able to say no. **** weak really but fortunately my kids have the same intolerance to illicit/illegal drug taking that I have and as a parent I am very pleased. Interesting that for Jeff Tramadol didn't work too good. Must be a horses for courses thing. One thing I did gain from the experience was an understanding of why people do take illegal/illicit drugs as it was definately a 'great experience', but my tolerance towards drug taking/addicts/pushers/dealers has not changed one bit, treat the users as idiots and shoot the rest.
One thing I did end up with though is a complete aversion to taking drugs/pills of any kind. For example I just don't associate pain with taking pain killers. Drives SWMBO nuts. Must be a bloke thing. By the time I'm ready for a pain killer I'm way past the asprin, panadol, panadiene stage and cop the heartless nurse 'suck it up' attitude................sigh.
So 'It'sNotWorthComplaining!' if your 4 hourly pain killers wear out after 2 hours, just take some more, stuff it, there's no point in being healthy and living forever if you're in serious pain. The quacks will whinge and sook but I reckon there's plenty of leeway built into the dosage charts.
Anyway a Happy New Year to you and yours.

One way to overcome the wearing off is to mix alternate dosages of drugs with different active ingredients. Such as Ibuprofen and paracetamol. For instance first take a dose of ibuprofen (which will be recommended at 4 hr repeat doses) then 2 hr later take you paracetamol (again 4 hr recommended repeat doses) then 2hrs later your next dose of ibuprofen and so on. You don't exceed doses but have a managed stream of meds that overlaps and shouldn't both wear off.

I know it won't really apply with the stronger stuff as it's hard enough to get one of what you need let alone 2 different ones.

Deano, ask the nurse about CYP2D6 deficiency and see what she comes up with. It's a natural tolerance to opioids where you don't break it down to active substances. Occurs in about 7% of white population. My best effort was far too many Nurofen +'s for anyone's good to no effect because of it just to prove I could still function to a Doc and get something effective. Also can't use Tramadol as it interferes with Epilepsy (another thing I suffer). So I have a semi veg state if I take he Epliepsy meds as it slows down brain speed in essence, but have found that a continuous dose of codeine in the long term acts a stimulant (like in a dependence state where a user can't function w/out it) and cancels out the mental issues I have with the other stuff. Obviously not a publicised use but was found in other research and I took it to the neuro and he knew of the CYP deficiency and we tried itand it works with out effecting the function of the other meds. He's now researching it tose where it leads.

I was on lyrica, which is also an epilesy drug, but it was used on me to control the involuntary shaking on my left side ( turet like but with out the swearing) I can relate to the zonked state,i was unable to go out and drive as I was in la la land most of the time.Mersyndol forte just made me sleepy all the time (Codeine), and then didn't give pain relief after a while.
The di-gesics I'm on now don't relieve any pain, neither the panadeine fortes. The Ketamine infusion gave me relief 100% whilst it was being pumped into my veins continuously for the week along with magnesium, the halucinations, out of body experiences and tripping but that was only whilst it was in me, after leaving the hospital the pain came back with avengence.
It's a case of being pain relieved and being zonked out and not being able to have a normal life, of the case of being in constant pain and still not having a normal life.
I also had the third (option) well bad thoughts
going through my mind, but it's not really an option, but unfortunately the thoughts went through my mind. I immediately saw professional help and meds for that. The mind starts putting thoughts in my head in desperation, and this scared me big time.
