Wages cost in Australia is a problem, but that is because we have higher taxes to pay for a social safety net. Remember that 4 weeks annual leave, long service leave and paid sick leave were introduced before most living Australians were born. Those social benefits were rightfully won by the union movement when we as a country had one of the highest standards of living in the World.
I don't want to see Australia end up like the US with large numbers of people living in refrigerator boxes in public parks. It may be free market, but it is also freedom to starve.
As for the retailers, they need to accept that in a market as small as Australia (2% of the global economy) retailers that limit themselves to a national market, must also accept that their personal profit should also be limited to 2% of their international competitors. As it stands they maximise their personal income by marking up their prices significantly more than than their overseas competition. Poor Gerry and Solomon I have no sympathy for you and your mates, I'll shop overseas because it is better for my personal bottom line.
