Speaking of the dangers, on one of the logging tramways near Bulahdelah NSW, the most dangerous job was that of the brakeman. The brakemen rode on the log tram trucks, and hauled with all his weight on the rope that applied the simple block brakes, often leaning off the wagon supported by the brake rope. The engine was sandwiched in the middle of the train and had virtually no braking effect at all, merely skidding along the usually wet and greasy rails.
It was said that if a new brakeman survived till lunchtime, he was cut out for the job.

    Hi guys,

My "pop" was a tassie logger for decades. The early shots (B series macks and such) remind me of the photos he used to show me when I was a kid.

I've been trying to get them off "nan" for years so I can scan and preserve them but she never let's them out of the house since "poppy" passed away.

Hi Korg,my name is Darren Hingston and I've come over from the HCVC site. Great pictures, sure brought back a lot of memories. Have seem most of the newer trucks in their heyday, still see a few of them arounf here like the Yellow Valueliner Mack which is still carting logs. Most of the others have been retitred onto easier jobs nowdays, mostly tippers etc.

Hope you don't mind but I've sent you a P/M

I know the guy that owns one of those B Model Macks.

I should ask a few people i know, they might know the where abouts of those trucks.

Great photos, is that truck in the black and white photo (dog nose with air cleaner on the left) an Oshkosh (think that's how you spell it)?

Here as weird thought. My natural dad was not only a logger as I posted, but also a Tassy logger ( yeas I`m a tasmanian and have the scar were they removed the 2nd head to prove it ) Would it be a coincedent if he had worked wit the mob in the pic`s ?

    I believe it's either a Hayes or a Pacific.........both built in Canada.

    G'day!
I don't mind at all. Like I wrote in the original post- if the pictures are of interest or of value to anybody I'm very glad. I'm not a truck bloke myself but I appreciate the vehicles and plant as machines that have a lot of meaning for some people especially those who worked with them in years gone by. I particularly enjoy the styling of the older vehicles but I'm not in any way truck savvy.

Please, anybody, use any of these pictures in any way you like. I'm glad they didn't end up in landfill. Who knows whether the originals still exist?

There was a whole bunch of old tractor pics on the hard drive too:
