why do you want to get rid of the Union Jack RB?

so replace one 'nations' flag (britain) with another ? the "indigenous flag?"
what if some object to that?
If you are going to re do the flag, do it from scratch, dont replace one controversy with another...
personally I am for keeping the flag AND the monarchy....
but that is only my opinion/preference...
As for John WILLIAMSONs song, interesting that of all the characters in Australias past he chooses a theif and murderer to consult... I like some of his stuff but dont like anything that praises up a theif and killer...
(if we have a referendum and decide to change everything can we do like everyone is calling for now and have another a while later and change it all back? .. )
as an aside, loosely related..
When I walked the kokoda track we spent a lot of time talking to locals both the porters, people along the track but also in Buna and Gona...
Their overwelming comment was that they should have stayed part of Australia when they had the chance... and that the keenness to be a new country and for change away from "australian colonial rulers" etc ended up sweeping them all up... they now say that they regret the lot and in general 'pine' to be part of australia again...

I wounder about the Irish connections of a lot of the leading republicans:)
If we were to change our flag, something like the Canadian one would work for me, simple, but distinctive. I don't think we need an elaborate design [ I don't mind the present one] Bob
Canada didn't become a republic and they haven't dumped the Queen, their soldiers fought with/under the British in both World Wars and Korea but managed to change their flag to something that is both simple and distinctive, without the Union Flag of Britain subjugating the most important canton.
The union jack featuring on the australian flag is not reason enough to change the flag. In no way is the union jack 'unaustralian'. It commemorates a huge event in this counties history. Unless you are indigenous to this land it would be rediculous to see the union jack as an affront.
If the flag is to develop then it should be transfomed to show a unity between indigenous and 'settler' australians in a fair and equal society. Unfortunatly Australia still has some work to do there.
I would support a flag update if its purpose was to include indigenous australians, but not just to remove the union jack. If its updated I think the union jack should become less prominent but some form of homage should remain, however suttle.
If you wanted a simple flag that portrayed the country of origin then as in the Canadian example just a green background with a kangaroo emblem would sufice.Perhaps there's room for various flags for purposes.
I disagree, if you change the flag it should be a flag for all australians,
if we change it because we find the british flag offensive or dislike it etc
how is using the indigenous flag any different?
In SA we have a state govt that has decreed all govt buildings that can have two flagpoles will and they will fly the Australian flag AND the indigenous flag, This, I believe is wrong, indigenous australians are australians, as are people of angle saxon descent, greek descent etc etc...
so the Australian flag is for all of us, by flying the indigenous flag I feel they promote a feeling of a 'seperate nation or people' as opposed to acknowledging them as part of "a people" (eg nation as a whole).
As an example, do the american indians have a seperate flag flying across the american countryside whenever the american flag flies? No, they are proudly flying the American flag themselves... they still have their own identity as an "indian nation" but are very proud to be american.
There will still, in my opinion, be a strong "us and them" feeling (both ways) in a lot of society until this dual display ends as an everyday thing..... for that reason I dont agree with "mixing flags " together..
Once again this is my opinion only, and not intended to offend anyone.
