It's not that hot in the desert in winter. For example, the average maximum temps for Coober Pedy and Alice Springs are in the low to mid 20's from May to September, although further north it's in the 30's pretty much all the time.

Can get into the 40s quite regularly Aug/Sept basically anywhere from Coober Pedy across and up, but can also get quite cold at night. Can get even hotter even in winter and the posted temps are taken in the shade not in the sun.
Of course you can travel without an air con, it has been done many times, but it all depends on the level of comfort that you want. Makes a lot of difference to fatigue when travelling.
Pretty much up here at the moment you cant even leave the house.

Believe me once you hit this part of the country, especially on dusty roads you will want an air con, if not to cool the car, to at least pressurize it a bit to keep some of the dust out. A lot will depend on how much dirt road driving you are going do.
But the Aircon compressor would work, then you need to rig up a way to get it all inside. Even if you buy a disco dashboard and rob the parts you need, anything is possible.

We did an around Aust trip in an air con defender and really never used it in 9 months. I remember one hot day around Port Headland where it was on for a long haul along the black stuff. If you are going where you should be in a defender then windows down or vents open is the way to go

I reckon it was the worst decision ever not to include vents in the new defender for that reason ... especially when my new 90 joins the long list of those who's air con does not work properly and now needs warranty repair

I have never been one for using aircon in any car. Unless its a real stinker outside im a windows down man. When we are driving around at work my offsider usually wants the windows up and the aircon on full bore. I'd much rather turn it off and hear whats happening outside with the window down.
