    How well do you know your job?

    I popped in to Supercheap Auto to buy a tire tred depth gague. The don't sell them. But the saleman was everso helpful and took me next door to the tire shop, I think they were called Midas? Any way - they knew what we were talking about but didn't have one in the hop to lend me. So one fo the tire fitters offered to have a look at my tires for me. As we walked over the parking lot I asked him "what are the rules here in Australia? In the UK the minimum tread depth is 1.6mm, is it the same here?" He umm'd and then he thought about it then he ah'd a bit before fianaly mumbling something about not being too sure.

    From a bloke wo sells and fits tires? Can this be true? lol

    yep, you'd be suprised. As long as he knows how to fit them and send them out the door.

    There are tread wear indicators on the tyre, when the tread is the same depth as them then its time to get new tyres. But I believe 2mm is the rule here.

    Having said that most people seem to go until you can see the belting under the rubber, I think they have their tread wear indicators mixed up

    1.6mm is the legal minimum standard and it applies all the way across the tyre.

    if one of the tread blocks that can make contact with the road under normal driving conditions is under your tyres need replacing.

    if you want to know a legal standard for a vehicle ask an insurance assessor.

    Used to be that the tyre was alright if the tread was deeper than the head of a match.

    Yes, I had a good reply for this thread typed up but I'm so exhausted/jaded I can't even be bothered arguing a case anymore.

    But the point you raise is something that is causing untold stress for me atm, anyway.

    the good old guys at Supercheap eh? Having previously worked there for 6 years (High school and through uni) I have worked with many a numbskull. I could go on all day and night about the "recommendations" I’ve heard team give customers... ! Put WD40 on your rotors to stop them squeaking. Oh, and that if you put rust converter in your fuel, it will stop your muffler rusting out....it needs to be done every service! Not kidding!
