    Mechanics Hrly rates ?

I know I sound like a tight arse and I probably am

I just spoke with a very good service company in Vic who advise their hrly rate is now $ 130

    I thought the other place at $ 110 was a bit steep but , $ 130 confused:

    Exclamation

By the time the overheads are taken out, he is probably left with $50 p/h just like the rest of us, or some of us.

I pay anywhere between $90-140 here in SA.

Got to love the labour government.

The more we go and buy our stuff overseas too and supply our own parts the more we will get slugged for labour as their margin gets diminished.

I would rather they supply the bits and reduce the hrly rate.

But funny you should say that.

I am thinking of using a great mech ( not landy savvy bit good all the same ) at $85/hr and supplyinmg the bits myself.

I know another Large service place in Vic buys a lot of their parts/ etc f direct out of the UK

local mazda/jeep/honda franchisor charges customers $120/hr....

    .... pays his mechanics $16.50/hr

.....that leaves $103.50/hr for him to pay workers' super, holiday & sick pay, supervision, workshop rental and a bit of profit etc etc

My mechanic charges me $80 per hour. He is very good in that if something does not need doing he will not do it. Just had the 120K service on the Nissan and he said "you do realise this is one of the expensive ones?". I asked him for a rough idea of cost and he said about $600-$700!!!! In the end the diff oils were fine so he didn't change them total cost including getting the aircon serviced and regassed was about $500!!! That also included a complete flush and fluid change in the auto box.
He used to work on the 4wd's in the mines so knows what will go wrong.

Geez - if they are qualified mechanics - don't care what background, I'll get them a job in Vic (Metro - outer East) right now staring at $32 per hour - even at this rate, we can't get enough starters - some others in the area are paying $36 to $37 per hour for a qualified mechanic. They are now even looking overseas for people. We have a SEVERE skills shortage down this way... Thought it was like this everywhere.... Any takers?

Oh, by the way - paying $80 to $130 per hour is about the going rate for a diesel mechanic, slightly less for a standard garage spanner man...

How did he know the oils were fine? Analysis? Smell or smudge test or he didn't have any in stock.

Just a thought but oil change intervals are recommended for a reason, I would have changed especially if you going to hang onto vehicle but thats just me.

$16.50 is well below the industry wage guide and not sure it's correct.

To have a apprentice costs more these days than it ever has(thanks labour government). Our 1st year carpenters after all expenses are $720 p/w.
4th year is $1050. The apprentice gets approx half that.

Mechanics have a award structure, $16.50 is not there anywhere.

Even if their h/r rate is $25.00 p/hr, by the time all the super/tax/workcover/ leave loading and holidays etc are paid we are in the $40 p/h.

To run a workshop costs a bucket, just power, water and rates are enough to make anyone shudder. Hence the rates.

I have a great Mercedes mechanic here in SA that works from home. Much lower overheads hence better fees.
Bee Utey works from home and his rates are great and his knowledge alone is worth what ever he asks anyhow.
