The son of a friend of mine has just finished his recruit course, posted to Manoora, now is going to the UK to pick up Largs Bay, how tinny is that, in a dog watch, and a trip to Europe. [ wonder how many Land Rover parts he can fit on board to bring back, hmmmm, must take a carton around to his Dad's place] Bob.

There's a MoD sale by tender going on at present which includes some diesel 432 carriers and 434 REME fitters carriers as well as 90 and 110 Land Rovers including Snatch Land Rovers.

Do you think anyone would notice if they arrived in a military looking convoy?

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

You would think the ADF may fill it up with equipment on its way over here...

Maybe they could buy some helicopters that after spending a billion dollars upgrading them only to find out they were not the type of helicopter that actually flies in the air.

Or maybe some of those 200 mothballed Challenger 2 Tank's ( upgraded ) to replace the US junk they bought.

Unfortunately, the Australian Gov. [ of all persuasions] has form in regard to equiping the armed forces, as far back as WW2, where our front line fighter at the beginning was completely outclassed, there were no tanks , inadequate artillery, no aircraft carrier, the 8th Div., sent to Singapore ill prepared, untrained, ill equiped Militia sent to New Guinea.......In most cases, it was only the courage and sacrifice of the men and women involved at the sharp end that got us thru the early days.

The governments of those days had the excuse of the Great Depression, there just wasn't any money to spend. Nowadays is a different story, we keep getting told how good we have had it over the past few years, how our economy is still strong, there is just no excuse for some of the embarrasing stuffups in Defence purchasing lately. It all seems so ad hoc, get the cheapest, add bits to it to give it the capability we want. The helicopter we bought from the US. [cant remember the name] Defence filled the cockpit with so many high tech. gizmos our pilots couldn't fit in to fly it!If it wasn't true it would be funny.New Zealand fly the same helicopter in its basic form without problems [not as capable, but a good utility aircraft] Anyway, rant finished, beautiful day out, going to take the disco up to bribie for a run, Bob

    Hi Guys,

As far as amphibious craft go, how did HMAS Jervis Bay stack up???

    Did anyone serve on her?

I'm interested as I worked on "Swift" when it was being built for the Americans (HSV-02 from memory) and believe it is still in service in the rapid deployment / beach landing role? Not sure if Jervis Bay was as capable (beach landing, vehicle deployment) as she was much earlier build and was a passenger (although refitted) ferry prior to the RAN operating her.

Just wondering if the amphib role could have been served by a craft like this build in OZ?

Which Jervis Bay you talking about - the Ro/Ro ship or the cat that was in temporary service during Timor?

The first was not amphibious in itself and really needed specialist Ro/Ro facilities to get the best out of it. The second was again - not amphibious.

In recent history then only proper amphibious ships have been the Landing Craft Heavy and Tobruk - and with Tobruk she could only be beached in exceptional circumstances.
