    Foulcan E-Gas Barra Engine

I've been looking at buying a BA Foulcan. A ute has come up that a friend is selling at a rather hard to pass price, but its an E-Gas engine.

I'd have assumed if you were going to the bother of building a dedicated gas engine it'd have decent sequential vapour injection but it looks like a barbecue hose down the intake system. The economics make it hardly cheaper to run than a petrol version.

Would it be much work to change it to a gas injection system? Seeing as the tank etc is all in place already?

They are a great idea sunk by a second rate gas system made down to the lowest possible price. Pat

No joy using aftermarket gas injection here as you need petrol injection to provide the signals to run the gas. It might be possible to engineer but you would require emissions testing for a novel system. Find a petrol ute and gas convert it. BTW the e-gas Falcons run fine with the mixer system and get quite good economy, similar to vapour gas injection but without the top-end power. Metering is still according to the oxy sensor output. If you want a straight gas liquid injection Falcon ute, Orbital Autogas is apparently developing the FG update with Ford. It should be on the market this year.

I have a BA falcon e-gas and it is VERY cheap to run, I get around 550ks per tank, (100L) around town and maybe another 100ks+ on a run, its been pretty reliable in that it has only actually stopped a couple of times, both due to failed solenoids which are only about $50 each, generally they fail due to poor heat shields. There are about 8 solenoids on the BA.

It has however had a persistant and re-occuring issue with coils making it run badly. fords are about $80 each, aftermarket about $100 a set (6). Im not sure if this is a common issue with the BA.

What you really must look out for is the radiator, see if its been replaced or if it has had an aftermarked transmission cooler installed. Ford in thier wisdom made the radiator a dual tranny and coolant cooler. It is divided with aluminium which has sort of welsch plugs that corrode. This is very common. check the water for oil and the coolant bottle for discolouration. If the rad has not buggered up yet get a new one quick or an aftermarket transmission cooler. if not you will end up with water in your transmission fluid, not good ! Have a look on the ford forums, this issue is so common it should be a recall.

other BA issue is warped brake rotors, very common dont use fords rotors, get DBA's. Also the diff has a tendancy to bugger up so check that out well.

I had a BA flacon e gas which I did 140,000k's in 3 years and was surprised and very happy with it.

It was a company car so i used to give it real crap, you know what they say about company cars :-)

The only problem I had with mine was that every 6 months months it would blow a hose of the engine and make the car feel like it was running on half the amount of cylinders. But towards the end this seamed to sort it self out . I now have a FG ( hope that's the right one ) falcon (new one ) gas and that is the same as the old one 74 Ltrs of gas to fill it and about 550k's out of a tank . So yeah pretty cheap to run . I am always surprised how you really can't tell it's a gas car when driving it.

Just as a company car ,it annoys me the size of the boot or rather the lack of it , and the poor positioning of the spare . Think could have at least set to the back of the boot rather than right in the middle at the front

The other thing to check is that not all ford dealerships service the gas ones. I have to go to the other side of Brisbane to get mine serviced . When there is a dealership around the corner from me

BTW I have my FG till October then territory diesel :-)

+1 for the E Gas Falcons, very well behaved for a gas vehicle and extremely cheap to run. We got ours at 35000KM and the only things I have needed to do apart from regular service have been Tyres, Front brake pads and disks and a set of spark plugs at 100,000 KM. SWMBO does 600KM+ a week and it costs her about $50.00.
