G'day from a wet and cold Sandy Creek.
Can any one please help me ID my Landrover ?
The chassis number is 90303912A and the last owner told me it is a 1974 Series 3 SWB Estate Wagon so is this right ?
I would be greatfull for any info from any one.

This suggests that it is in fact not a genuine station wagon, but a basic Landrover brought up to station wagon standard or something like it, which could have been either before or after initial sale. The CKD makes it likely that it was Australian assembled - it should have a compliance plate on it, probably near the radiator, but this may be missing, or if it was not in fact Australian assembled, may never have had one - in the early years of ADRs things were not all that tight for individual imports.

I cannot speak for series 3's but earlier SWB station wagons could not be identified from their chassis numbers which all indicate 88 basics.
Distinctly unhelpful to identify bona fide station wagons.

I seem to remember that Station Wagons were not assembled in Australia, so the CKD (probably) means it was not one. But that assumes I am remembering right, and this may have only applied to a particular period anyway. It is very hard to tell the difference between a station wagon and one that has been brought up to that standard after manufacture - and if done properly, does it matter?

Certainly my series 1 88 station wagon was assembled here by Pressed Metal and its chassis number indicates a 88, CKD RHD Basic not a station wagon, though the Grenville delivery records confirms it to be a station wagon.
Though things may have changed by the time the series 3 came along. I did have a 71 series 3 swb in the early 90s that on reflection may have been a swb station wagon - it had a tropical roof, roof top vents, rear door rather than tailgate, rear seats - however it did not have a heater, alpine lights or internal trim so may have been a basic just optioned up - certainly nothing on the nomenclature plates indicated anything.

You are correct about the 88" station wagons. There were very few assembled in Australia, although there were some in both the S1 and SIII era (and poss. in the SIIa).
But no the image of your SIII was not a station wagon even though it had a tropical roof. The 88 station wagons post S1 had full deluxe trim, alpine lights, had the same sliding rear window panels and full length door as the 109" wagons. Yours was a hard top, with rear seats. The full length door was also an option on the hard top. These optioned up hard tops usually still had the hinge fittings for the upper tailgate which were not present on the station wagons.

Thanks Diana - that was what I thought - actually I don't think I have ever seen a series 3 swb wagon.
Also a coincidence - as you have advised my series 1 wagon was owned by the Anthony Horden family of Sydney retailing fame but the Series 3 above was owned by the Fairfax family - the media family. I bought the series 3 in 1988 from the side of the road at one of their properties just outside Camden. I sold it to a young nurse in 1993 so she could go in style to B&S Balls - it is still on the road in Canberra somewhere - I last saw it about 18 months driving through the CBD in Canberra.
