Thread: Banned the wearing of hoodies

Just plain stupid. Use whatever floored reasoning you like to support banning hoodies but it is just plain ridiculous. What next, ban rain jackets, scarves, maybe hats.
Yes people will try and use them to hide their identity but really, they can also used a hundred different things.
I can accept that maybe they could be asked to drop the hood when entering a shop, but that is it.
I believe the security guard has overstepped the mark and what he has done is probablly illegal and infringing on civil liberties as no crime had been committed. Hope the mother sues the arse off of Centro.
We will be in Geraldton in a couple of weeks and see what happens when I wear my hoodie in.

Hoodies as such havent been baned but wearing the hood up when in certain shopping centres has been, as stated it is private property and the owners can do that same as banks and servos with the no helmet policy

addon: I dont know what its like in WA but try to walk around centro bankstown on thur night groups of up to 12 or more youths (10 to mid twentys) congregate round and block walkways and entrys all with their hoods up and they are not all mid eastern some are wantabes. Many people complain they are intimidated/threatened I was brought up to remove all head wear inside, RSL/house/shops etc as a sign of respect

Lets ban 4wd's and bullbars because they could be used in ram-raids....

I didn't read all the responses...

I have a background in retail banking. I expect customers to remove anything that conceals their identity to the point that security footage won't allow them to be identified. That said...we have a customer who comes and withdraws cash every week. He wears a hat with the full ear flap piece (I don't know the technical term for that!). It's essentially a hoodie. He also happens to have a mental impairment. How do I tell him that he has to remove his hat because he could be perceived by someone as a threat? I can see his face just as I can someone wearing a hoodie. What about all the labourers who come in with beanies on? Or the 70 year old Italian man who wears his sailors cap?
Hoodies don't conceal an identity. They're certainly not high fashion but they're hardly in the same catergoy as a burka or motorcycle helmet that prohibits a staff member or security camera from observing what an individual looks like.

I'm sure if people are determined to hide their identity they could always go the Mrs Doubtfire route...

Me, too, and I still do. I recall having to chip some tourists who left their hats on in Parliament House in Canberra. Worst of all was needing to tell an American to remove his hat inside Changi Prison Museum on Anzac Day,

a shopping centre is PRIVATE property not public property and they say what the conditions are if you want to enter it the same as you have the say who enters your property
