I've had half a dozen Dyson vacuums - all picked up broken, and fixed. Although the bagless suction thing is great the rest of the vacuum is more focused on style rather than strength.

Several of them had faults with the power cord - retract into the body of the vacuum type it looked like the wire wasn't quite up to it. The carpet sweeper heads clog up incredibly easily and have to be completely pulled apart - screwdriver, leverage, etc. - to be cleaned. And many of the plastic parts are easy to break - handles to dust bowl and handle to vacuum hose.

I've had two Dyson's, although the first one departed prematurely with the ex. The second is going strong.

Not had any issues with breakages although the pet galah decided to acquire a taste for power cords...regrettfully not while the bloody thing was live!

The carpet head does need a bit of TLC, as the long haired bipeds around here leave hair strands everywhere...have you ever seen a hairball half a foot long!!?

So it's designed by a ingenious pom, initially built in England but now transferred to Asia (Malaysia) and needs regular fettling with owner supplied tooling......its about as close as you can get to a Land Rover in the Vacuum world!!

I think most people compare the dysons to the kirbys. They dysons are the only vacuume which does not lose suction as the bag gets full as everyone knows, and the kirby does loose suction as it fills, however a little known fact about the kirby is that when the bag is full and it has its least suction, it is still more powerful than the dyson! Which dyson? I dont know but you can read this comparison online.

Only real downside to the Kirby is that its too much strain for the average female frame...

- Because it sucks so well, it grabs the floor....and the mechanics of pushing/pulling are pretty savage on a smaller person's joints and muscles..

- Which is why they came out with a motorized model.

The suction-driven 1/3 sheet sander works very well !

Dyson wins hand down in my book. We use one daily in our veterinary hopital, it vacuums the patients when being prepped for surgery as well as cleaning the rest of the place and then gets dragged outside for the various vehicles. We also "borrow it" to use at home. It copes extremely well with fur, has been incredibly easy to maintain and keep clean, and only now after 10 years use are we considering replacing it, with another Dyson of course. Spare parts, on the rare occasions they have been needed, have always been readily available and delivered promptly. It doesn't require any consumables like bags either. I think Dyson Vacuums are excellent value for money.

Had a mate who had the Kirby man come to visit...

Lots of sales speak and a price several weeks pay for my mate...

Whilst the "demonstration" was going on I went home, got my Dyson and came back..

Lets just say the salesman wasnt impressed and my mate now owns a Dyson...

Not to mention I jumped on the the net and got a price for a Kirby - 230v version, shipped to Oz at less than half the price locally...

Kirby are good, but over rated... Sort of like old Toyota Landcruisers :twisted: and now just sell on the old reputation....

My brothers mate years ago became a kirby sales dude, brought one around to give the spiel to my brother, sucks up a heap of dead skin and oogly bits from the mattres, "this is why you should buy one", brother replies, that's impressive, but I've been sleeping on that **** for 25 years now without harm":D

Try your local Godfrey's vacuum centre.
I went in to buy some cleaning stuff for the carpet and there was a brand new Kirby sitting there.I asked how much he was selling it for......$500. :o
It came with all the attatchments as well. They only get them in every now and then.
Bought mine of fleabay for $1000,but that was 6 years ago,only replaced the bags and 1 belt.
