thanks for the write up....cannot wait to get out there again myself
Hi all. Just back from 3 weeks on the road from Brisbane to Uluru and back. Itinerary was Brisbane - Mitchell - Longreach - Boulia - Jervois Station (Plenty Highway) - Alice Springs - Kings Canyon - Uluru (and Kata Tjuta) - Coober Pedy - Lyndhurst (via William Creek and Marree) - Innamincka - Cunnamulla - home. The dirt roads we used included the Plenty/Donohoe highways, The Ernest Giles track, the Oodnadatta track and the Strzelecki track.
2002 D2 TD5 auto towing a Lifestyle camper trailer. I was worried how the D2 would go mechanically on such a demanding road trip but the only problems I got were the 3 amigos leaving the Lyndhurst Campground (faulty brake sensor I believe), some minor stone damage on the back door and a couple of cracks in the windscreen from stray stones.
Brilliant holiday with the wife and kids. I'ld go again tomorrow if I could get more time off work.

G'Day Frank. Sounds like a great trip, BUT..............
Everyone would love some photos and more detail in the trip report.
Me included.
Cheers, Dave.
LOL. Dave, cannot promise photos straight away but will definitely post some up in the next day or two. I am still sorting through approx 1700 photos (almost 8gb of data). But, as you say, rules is rules...
What sort of trip details are you after?

I have attached the original itinerary. This changed a little before we left, noteably the end of the trip where we reduced time spent on the Strzelecki track and arrived home by the Thursday night and also the Plenty Highway where Tobermory station is no longer opened and we went through to Jervois station. I have also uploaded a few photos to give readers an idea of the conditions.
Just a few more photos. The road and track conditions were generally very good. The Plenty/Donohue highways improved once in the Northern Territory. The Ernest Giles road from the Stuart Highway to Kings Canyon was the worst with some teeth jarring corrugations. The Oodnadatta and Strzelecki tracks were good overall. All camping was safe although we generally looked for camp grounds rather than free camping. The disco lapped it all up and ran like a clock the whole trip. The end of the trip was spent looking for the best place to watch the last state of origin game. This was done at the Cunnamulla Hotel - thanks to Trevor for his hospitality although he was going for the cockroaches... Onya Lockie
Here is my recommendation for places to see:
Longreach - a must. Try to see the show at the Stockman's hall of fame, the rest is just ok. The QANTAS museum is brilliant. Do the wing walk on thed 747 if your budget stretches that far. We also saw the school of the air which was interesting.
Barcaldine - The tree of knowledge
Winton - Some interesting dinosaur exhibitions I believe although we didn't have time to see any
Alice Springs - Take a walk down the Todd mall and get up to the lookout on the northern outskirts of town at dawn or dusk for a great view
Kings Canyon - a must
Uluru and KataTjuta - a must. Try and spend 3 to 4 days there as the walk up the rock is often closed due to strong winds. Plenty to do including walks around the rock, into gorges and into the olgas.
We didn't do the West or East McDonnells but I have heard that there is plenty to see there also.
You could also do the Mereenie loop from Alice to Kings but we didn't.
The best of the rest was the cooper creek at Innaminka and of course the dig tree.
So much to see so little time...
