Qld registration categories for S3 LWB hardtop

This is one mostly for Qld viewers or anyone with a knowledge of Qld registration.

What registration or insurance category (vehicle classification) is your Land Rover under? Some will be obvious like the utes and soft tops, but mine is curious and Qld transport can neither justify nor explain how it works.

It is a LWB 2 door standard hardtop, has 3 seats in the front and windows in the back. Last rego under the previous owner it was registered as a wagon. When I put it back on the road they first tried to classify it as a ute, which it isn't, and now it is classed as a van or panel van, which it isn't (generally you can't put seats in the back of a panel van but history shows you can with a hardtop since they came out this way). So as a 3 seater panel van is more expensive by about $40 a year to register (different CTP category) but according to main roads to be a wagon it must seat 4 or more. So has anyone else come across this same problem?

So a 2 door car that seats either 2 or 4 is still a sedan or coupe, same class. No idea why this is different?

It should be Class 1, not class 6.
Anyone telling you different is either mistaken or doens't know what they're talking about (including QT staff).
It's different because some muppet on the counter, doesn't know the regs and policy well enough.

Typical Qld beurocracy - the answer / interpretation you get depends entirely on who you're talking to at the time. And often they'll contradict themselves in a later conversation. Having quite a few licences & tickets for my trade, I see it all the time.
It drives you insane trying to get a straight answer, let alone an accurate one!

When I worked at Leyland Truck and bus, Rocklea we registered all LR's other than the four door wagons as utilities. Then a private reg. utility was the cheapest CTP classification.

You have the equivalent of a Toyota Troopie with seats - so what to Qld RTA classifiy the troopie as? I would have thought your landie would be the same.

It was originally that the classification specified by suncorp as the ctp class was for a ute/panelvan. If suncorp specifies it as this QT can't/won't register it as a class 1. Yet under the previous owner it was a class 1, however transport told me this was wrong. Strangely it is more ctp to insure as a 3 seater than as a 12 seater - I would have thought 12 people injured in a rollover and suing your ctp would cost them more than 3, but who's to understand. My hope was to rectify it before rego renewal comes up in october, and apart from fitting an additional seat which I eventually want to do, I'm not sure how to go about it. My worry is that if the class is wrong and I do have an accident, they will certainly blame me anyway for the error.

They won't classify it as a ute since it doesn't have a seperate cab. Plus it is harder to fit seats later on if classed as a ute according to them.

    This.

My (Qld Registered) IIA 109" Hardtop was originally registered as a panel van, until I converted it to a utility. So was/is my father's IIA 88".

The hardtop body type is closer to a van/panel van than any other type. Plenty of (panel) vans have side windows and seats in the back.

A Series 3 can be registered as a car, a van, a ute, or even an Omnibus (for a 10 seater stage 1).

Doesn't need a seperate cab, to be classed as a ute.
The fact that it will be, or was registered as a ute, is irrelevant to the requirements of adding seats later.

CTP class be changed before renewal, and it's QT who have the final call on what class it is, not the Insurer, when it gets registered/renewed.
You can also change CTP insurer at any time before renewal as well.

Fit the additional seat, getting a mod plate for it, take it to QT, and there is no way they could register it as a class 6.

Things have changed since then Brian.
People paid their rego in Rum, and the staff used abacuses!
