Riddle me this...rain water v water from wipers

    Hey All,

One of those Curiousity Show type questions. I have been offroad a few weeks ago and negated to clean Smokey. So windscreen has been very dirty/mud etc. I have tried many times to clean it up a bit using the windscreen wipers and water......to only smudge and make things worse.

Then yesterday we had a down pour of rain......and again used the windscreen wipers..........and now have a clean windscreen????????

So why the difference.....both water......one from the car.....one from the sky?

    Regards

    Stevo

    just a quick guess.
volume of water spread evenly with rain as opposed to a concentrated squirt in 2 spots.

i also notice this, my guess would be just more water spread across the windscreen, not the piddly amount that the sprayers splash on there.

I don't know why you have observed what you have Steveo, but tap water (presume this is what was in your washer bottle) tends to be slightly alkaline (it is chlorinated) and have a range of dissolved minerals in it, including carbonates which also contribute to its alkalinity. Rain water tends to be acidic with little dissolved minerals. Also the rain tends to last for a longer time span than the time to squirt water on your windscreen. This would mean that the windscreen is wetter longer, allowing the moisture to more deeply penetrate into (and under) the dirt particles, assisting in their being washed off the screen. Oh, and rainwater includes angels pee, which reputedly can achieve miracles.

I would guess the rain lasted much longer than the attempt with the washer, and properly wet the muck on the windscreen. And there would have been a lot more of it, and probably better distributed.

Thanks for responses to date.... but this is looking like a winner. I have observed it on a few occasions whereby I have used heaps of squirts and same result. Done it intermittant...same result. Then it rains and all clear. Thought maybe the power of the rain splatting may have an effect. Also the actual rain time was probably about 4-5 mins tops. So thought something must be in the rain.

Stevo, I have the answer to your query. Put rainwater in your washer reservoir. Still, as Tombie says.....probably just a D2a thing......
