first ever Aussie. amateur boxing champs., two of them!
Clay Waterman,15, from Qld.,became the first Australian amateur boxer to win a World championship, followed 2 hours later by Jai Opetaia, from NSW.They did this in Kazakhstan, Clay defeated the local champ first up, followed by a Russian, then a Romanian in the semi-final, and Iranian in the final [14-13] for the gold medal.Clay fought in the 46 kg division, Jai in the 80 kg division. To quote Clays trainer, Mark Wilson, " Clay has a boxing brain and can read a fight well.He can change from boxer to a fighter during a bout if needed. He's one of the few who can be both boxer and fighter at international level." There is a photo of Clay in the Courier Mail, talk about eye of the tiger, a very intense young man. Bob
