After the hassles with the RTA and neighbour suggested that it would be great if we could make our own number plates using the registration number allocated by the RTA.
Does anyone know what the law is on this approach.
The NSW RTA have separate charges for registration and number plates.
Therefore is it possible to register the car and save the $39 for the plates by making your own - so long as they comply with any reqts.
I could be wrong, but that would probably land you in a pile of poo.

SubscriberNo. You must display the RTA issued plates. Even if you made a set that looked the same, you can still be fined.

It used to be that (DIY) way in SA some time ago - but NSW plates are 'issued' and 'remain the property of ' the RTA. Even though you pay for them. Typical huh.
by the time you got some metal, cut it to size, punched the raised letting and got the correct reflective paint i'll cost you more than $39, don't be a tight wad. pay the money

Yup. Must be plates authorised by the Authority (RTA) - which means issued by the RTA.
Displaying 'unathorised' plates may secure you a bill of $344 and 3 demerit points......

Before you could buy "bike carrier plates" (another word for bend over and we'll access your anal atm). We used to make fibreglass plates by just casting the reverse side of a std plate with black and yellow gelcoat.
the paint on the plate is special to allow photography and the computor identification.so repainting an old plate is also naughty.
my university relitives disagree with me and think the NSW RTA is a well run system.
the rta allows due process and other words i cant spell-regaurds road users use of roads.
This is tech bable for do nothing and hope nobody catches on.
the claim is they raise money to cover costs-and user pays is a good thing-right-but I dont think I charged proportionally the amount I use the system-and they waist more than they raise and the road system and vehicles are crap-and they also take state and fedral tax money grant etc.
the only benifit I could find is providing photo identification.

I have spent thousands on a car, hundreds on rego and transfer so the money itself is not the issue.
However, based on all the comments above it looks like a forlorn hope.
Looks like I just keep bending over - lets just hope they use vaseline.
