So my backpacker mate has just bought a toyota hiace van 2.8 diesel. I tried to talk him into getting a defender tdi300 but failed.
So He left his hiace running to charge the batteries and came back 15mins later to find in shut off. We tried to jump start which failed as it made a massive click at the starter motor, we then tried tow roll starting it with my trusty discovery tdi. The van would just skid in 2nd gear than slip the clutch in 3rd.
DOes this sound like a seized engine??
ANy help would be appreciated..

Cheers for the reply bud. We're in Perth now but cheers for the offer. We were really hoping it was maybe something simpler/cheaper, like (wishful nieve thinking) astarter motor jamming... Not sure how an engine just seiZes like that. It was driving like a tdi300 last week.
it could have been right up till you tried tow starting it, that should have thrown the starter loose if it was.... (and it would have been making one HELL of a racket while the engine was running if the starter was stuck on.)
you could try giving it a good shove backwards in 4th.
how it happens is simple something went wrong, the oil pressure dropped to 0 the coolant went away, a rod came loose, the timing chain let go... plenty of things can go wrong in an engine.
check the oil and check the coolant...
see what rocking it back and forth in fourth does. IF the fan tries to move its not "siezed" but "jammed". it could be anything from a buckled rod to a timing chain wrapped around the crank.
first things up, drop the sump and chuck the MK IIs in there. if its not obvious down there theres some options of nasty open to you.

Get your battery load tested to see if its flat/furked. The tojo vans are dogs to push/tow start as they have bugger all weight on the rear and the wheels tend to skid anyway even if the motor is fine.
Just a question - you did try to tow start it in fourth gear didn't you? Far too many try to do so in first, which will produce exactly those symptoms (if it doesn't damage the gearbox!).

We tried the rocking back and forth in forth gear and yeah the fan doesnt move at all (compared to what we tried in a mates hilux) Not a good sign.
Whats do you mean by MK IIs ?
Yeah its good, its reading 12.5 volts.
Doesnt look good as we can even get the fan to move when rocking it in forth gear.

Na we only tried third but the clutch slipped, than second but it was just skidding down the road.
