    Thing is that your post read's as it reads....

    Not really advocating banning the snatch strap, but certainly its promotion needs to be curtailed.
    Now tell me Alan and other simple folk how we are meant to interpret that? Now had you added the balance of what you have written in your pompous response....then it would make more sense.

    Do not blame the reader if you are not able to deliver a clear and concise explanation/ and or leave it open to interpretation. Based on how I read it and believes it is read...I was bang on with my response......though my calling a spade a spade response could have been gentler .

    In terms of snatch straps...I have been snatched on quite a few occasions and also snatched other's. All done successfully and safely.......but also due to having the knowledge. As noted........times like this is when it is an opportunity to educate through the media about how it should be done properly.

    chainsaws, fireworks, vehicle mounted cranes, aircon gasses, oxy gear.

    Yep... a pattern where the majority are tarred due to an idiot minority. Went to Springs a couple of weeks ago......luckily one of the lads had some blue card??? so he could use a chainsaw.

    I forsee that you will need to be appropriately trained, and carry a card (like the piddly thing I have for a chainsaw liscence) to be able to purchase a snatch strap

    I personally dont rate snatch straps Cant deny they're effective BUT they store potential energy which can be a problem when things go wrong....

    I think the more expensive 3500kg rated balls may be OK,they are machined from 1 piece of steel rather than some of the brass balls cast onto a steel thread.PERSONALLY I WOULD NOT USE ANY OF THEM FOR RECOVERY.
    If absoloutley necesary a safe towball recovery can be made.PASS THE STRAP UNDER THE TOWBAR AND LOOP THE END OVER THE TOUNGE,BALL IF NEED BE.Any failiure directs the force towards the rear of the towing vehicle not towards the recovered vehicle.

    It's not really the tow ball that is the issue, it's the bolt. They suffer catastrophic failure when too much force is applied and when that force is applied quickly. They are only designed for trailer couplings. Others on here have gone into great detail before about the nature of the forces these things are designed to cope with.

    Most of our landies have tow bars rated at 3500kg (many tow bars are rated far less) so using a tow bar in a snatch recovery for heavier vehicles is also a no no. My snatch strap is rated at 10000kg over 3 times that of a tow bar so the loads in a heavy snatch are likely to exceed the tow bar limit.

    Some of the "towball" failures reported in the past have been actually failures in the tow bar and where the tow ball did fail there were generally of the non rated type. If the tow bar involved in this incident was a rated towball then it will be one of the first reported. Like most of us I am not happy about tow ball snatch recoveries but I also feel the same about snatching from tow bars. But for some reason people seem to think that because they are attached to the car with 6 or 8 bolts they are safe - forgetting they are only rated to 3500KG.
