    Dual batteries

    How hard or easy is it to install dual batteries in a disco 1 and what kits would u guys recommend I'm getting a fridge this week (arb) and need to sort out the power for it or is it just easier to get someone to do the install for me

    its a piece of cake, takes me about an hour. and most of that is spent routing the cables down to the back..

    check out traxride gear (forum member drivesafe).

    Whip out the trumpet on the Aircleaner, drop the second battery in the now vacated hole, bolt it down with a battery holder from supercheap (you may need to drill a couple of holes) plug a decent earth strap (one of the alternator mounting bolts is an excelent earth) onto a pair of good battery terminals, and plug in an SC80 (minimum spec there are much better kits from traxride to install especially if you are looking at future enhancements) then add a fuseable link or a distribution panel to hang your loads off of. (I also recommend getting the SC-80LR IMHO it looks after your cranking battery better than the stock SC-80)

    Done.

    (I run 2 fused leads back.. 1 goes to 2 ciggy sockets in the back of the center console, the second goes to a dedicated power output in the back that has 2 outlets, one dual purpose merit/ciggy socket and one polarised 32v type connector for the fridge or inverter. I sometimes put in a switch that lets you hook the normal ciggy socket and the car radio to the aux battery.)

    Cheapest way is to get a high current relay. I have been using this same one now for about 16 years and it still works fine you can get them for about $30.

    I wired mine up to an alternator feed so it only connects when engine is running. See picture below of my aux battery with the relay.

    Looking at the pics what did you do with your coil and power steering reservoir? I have a disco 1 series 2 and I had to move the coil and bend the powering steering fluid mount.

    Mine is a diesel so no coil. The power steering reservoir I relocated to the other side.

    I got mine in the same space without relocating the power steering reservor. You could unbolt the reservor bracket during installation of the battery tray and wiring and then when its all in bolt it back in place.
    If you fit a snorkel out the side of the aircleaner that leaves the space in front of the cleaner free for the battery.
    Recommend you do rust repair/painting/oiling etc in the space before you drop the battery tray down, as you won't be seeing it again for a while.

    There was no way I could fit a battery with the reservoir left where it was. Any how it was very easy to move, as the steering box is on the other side, from memory I made a new bracket. The other advantage is it goes into a dead space.

    I would love to have a bigger starting battery but can't because there are unmovable air con pipes beside the battery where I located the power steering reservoir.
