Now I know this is a landrover forum but as it is the only forum that I visit and I know a heap of people on here live on the easten sea board. Where is the best place to see whales?? I'm inland from the top of the gold coast (Jimboomba). In the 5ish months that Iv'e been here I've only managed to see the sea twice, and would like to know if there are any cliffs to watch the whales swim by from that is less than a days drive from here??
Lennox Heads is brilliant, as is Cape Byron.
Always see plenty there (and dolphins), plenty of space too.
Mate the above posts plus, North Stradbroke Island (point lookout), Moreton Island (Cape Moreton), Harvey Bay. North Stradbroke is the pick in Moreton Bay for easy access. Check out big red cat they often have some good deals for return trips.
Cheers
Cabarita is very good and its possibly the closest good site to you.
I'll second Straddie. Although the Gorge walk at Point Lookout is partially closed at the mo, it's still possible to see whales from the bit that's open. I was there at the weekend, but didn't see any whales, plenty of turtles around though.
Straddie is good for taking the Disco along the beach too.
Port Stephens is an excellent spot ... bit far though.

as far as point danger goes the whales often come inside the shark nets, so are often very close--but not all the time. they tend to go out at the mouth of the tweed, but may come back in close--not sure.
do not go whale watching when the sea is choppy. That makes them harder to spot.
I think this weekend will be out due to the weather
This was taken from a unit in Coolangatta/ Rainbow bay area a little while back! They do come in pretty close.
Most coastal spots with a good vantage point and exposed to the open sea will give you a good return provided you are patient enough and also lucky enough.
